Class 25: WED APR 17

Riddle: The Missing Dollar Paradox

    • There are no deadlines for your Short Paper Rewrites.
        • But if you’re planning to put your post into Feedback Please, you’ll be getting in a long line.
        • When your Portfolio is complete and Verified, on WED APR 24, it will have to include TWO of your THREE short arguments and their Rewrites. (Definition/Causal/Rebuttal). You choose which two.

Scholarship Revisions

    • Grade Levels II
        • An “in reverse” unpacking of dense, content-rich statements into their component parts: backwards advice.
        • BeezKneez has updated the in-text citations and References section to meet our class standards (even gone beyond our class standards for linking text to the sources).
    • SUN APR 14
        • The first draft of your 3000-word Research Position Paper was due.
        • This is the compilation of your three short 1000-word arguments carefully combined into a single well-reasoned research paper that is the culmination of your semester’s work on a single hypothesis.
    • WED/THU APR 17/18
        • Your Annotated Bibliography is due.
    • SUN/MON APR 21/22
        • Reflective Statements will be due, completing your Portfolio.
    • WED APR 24—PORTFOLIO DOUBLECHECK
        • We’ll meet in person at our regular time to Verify your Portfolios for Completion and Compliance. When your Portfolio has been verified, you can schedule your Final Grade Conference
    • FINALS WEEK — Grade Conferences by Appointment, on Zoom
        • Conferences will be held on MON APR 29, TUE APR 30, and WED MAY 01.
    • Only 2 classes remain.
        • After today’s.
        • Your Drop Dead Portfolio Deadline is just a week away.
    • If you’ve been keeping up.
        • By now you have posted your 3 short arguments (Definition, Causal, and Rebuttal)
        • You have a robust Proposal+5 with purposeful summaries of 10-15 mostly academic sources ready to rename as your Bibliography.
    • There are no deadlines for your Short Paper Rewrites.

Handling Sources

  1. Distinguish References from the Annotated Bibliography
    • The References section at the bottom of every argument, long or short, offers bibliographic notes in AP format to help readers identify sources you have cited in the argument.
      • Even for the 3000-word Research Argument, it is not a complete list of every source you consulted or read while preparing your semester’s work.
      • Short version: If you quoted, paraphrased, or named the author or the article in your argument, it gets a Reference. If you didn’t, it doesn’t.
    • The Annotated Bibliography is a separate post and a separate piece of work that goes in your Portfolio individually.
      • The Annotated Bibliography evolves from your Proposal+5. Add any sources you’ve consulted since you posted your Proposal+5 along with their Background and “How I Used It” paragraphs.
      • Change the name of your post from Proposal+5—Username to Bibliography—Username.
      • It provides bibliographic information in AP format for all the important sources you consulted in your research, whether or not you quoted or named them in your arguments.
      • It also contains the two sections “Background” (a Purposeful Summary of the important arguments the material provides) and “How I Used It,” (an explanation of how the work supports your argument or provides counterarguments).

Building the Portfolio

  1. How to Build the Portfolio
    • Consult the Portfolio Checklist for the 8 needed items.
    • Open any item in Edit mode.
    • From the sidebar, under Categories, check the special category that identifies your Portfolio post.
    • The nomenclature is: Portfolio/PortfolioUsername
      • For username DogLover, the category is Portfolio—DogLover . .
    • Update your post.
    • Find the results in the sidebar of the home page for our blog. ..
    • When your listing shows 8 items—and if they’re the RIGHT 8 items—your Portfolio is complete.
      • In the example, Holistic has added five items to the Portfolio.
      • ILoveMyDog has posted only one.

-“Only matters only when it matters”: Only should be used at the corrects spots in arguments. Each time the word is used the meaning should be understood. The word should not be put in the wrong spot as it could lead to a misunderstanding in what is meant by the writing.

Say things out loud so there’s no misunderstanding.

Your reference list is things you cite/quote whereas your bibliography list is comprised of any source you referenced during the creation of your paper.

You need 8 works in your portfolio (the correct 8).

Saying how much time you’re willing to spend on rewrites is an investment.

Instead of a final in this class, we have grade conferences during finals week.

The more claims you can fit into a sentence without making it confusing, the more effective it is.

The difference between the two sentences is a) that his goodness is undeniable whereas the other one b) means he’s a guy you can’t say “no” too. The point: the addition of ‘which’ or ‘that’ adds two separate meanings to the same sentence.

Find a worthy opponent if you haven’t already for your rebuttal argument — find the logical flaws and inconsistencies. Refute while you’re reporting.

A rhetorical question is used when you have a weak position, casting doubt on your reader. However, you want to guide, making claims. There’s not much need for rhetorical questions.

Your reflective statement is brief comments to each question regarding the core values. Link to the post that best demonstrates the value of the claim you’re claiming.

Your reflective assignment is evaluating your ability to be persuasive.

    • Riddle | The Missing Dollar Paradox: It’s a trick lol. Paying attention to wording, presentation of information, and understanding what is being said is important. If you’re not careful and you misread, you’ll get tripped up.
    • How to Build the Portfolio: Consult the instructor for the 8 needed items necessary to go into the portfolio. It’s really simple, make sure your works are in their needed categories.
    • Keep in touch with the instructor if questions are had to promote success.

grades in writing courses are subjective judgements

the blue text means no one can deny the jolly good fellow, the purple text means no one can deny the fact that he is a jolly good fellow.

your refutation needs to address a worthy opponent. if you don’t address your readers objections to your Pov, then they will still hold their opinion.

    • Our bibliography is due my tonight at midnight or tomorrow before class. We need to include the sources that we used for our essays or anything that we took informatuon from for our essays.
    • We should write how we used our articles for the essay.
    • How did that specific source contribute to our argument?
    • We should change the name from our proposal +5 to Bibliography – username
    • There is a portfolio checklist for the 8 items we need for the portfolio. We can look at that to help us figure out what we need.
    • Our portfolio is complete when we have the correct 8 items that we need.
    • We need to do our reflective statement and then our portfolio is complete.
    • After we do our portfolio doublecheck then we can schedule the final conference

Only Matters Only When it matters

    • Today we went through various examples of how the placement of one word, in this case only, can affect the meaning of an entire sentence.
      • We should use this information when writing our papers to make sure what we say in writing is actually what we meant to say

Only eight items should be in the portfolio.
