Workshop: Ag-Gag Arguments

Portfolio Task:
Research Position Paper

Invention by Naming

Syntax Lesson: Only Matters

A Case Study: Maintaining Control

This paragraph has a brilliant opening. A brilliant opening of which anyone should be proud.

A brilliant opening that goes wrong almost immediately and surrenders the ground it firmly established.

Women have to work harder in every aspect of life. Thankfully in today’s world, the fight for gender equality has progressed greatly. Despite this progression, there are still some kinks to work out, even in something that unites the world like sports. Throughout the years sports organizations and media have been under fire about the unfair treatment of genders and lack of female representation in televised sports. Women in sports have constantly fought to be represented and respected by not only their male counterparts but the world as a whole.

Women have to work harder in every aspect of life.

What a brilliant first sentence. It unapologetically maps out the territory and the rules. This writer is in command of the subject matter.

Thankfully in today’s world, the fight for gender equality has progressed greatly.

And then, gives it back. Women have had to work harder, BUT things are improving. I didn’t really mean it. Pay no attention to me.

Despite this progression, there are still some kinks to work out, even in something that unites the world like sports.

No, wait. women do still have to work harder while the kinks are worked out, even in sports, where we wouldn’t expect them to have to fight for equality.

Throughout the years sports organizations and media have been under fire about the unfair treatment of genders and lack of female representation in televised sports.

As I was saying in the first sentence, the Olympics, international sports leagues, media outlets, EVERYONE in fact, continues to treat women unfairly.

Women in sports have constantly fought to be represented and respected by not only their male counterparts but the world as a whole.

What was I thinking? “Gender equality has progressed greatly?” That’s what they WANT US to think! I call bullshit on that!

Women have to work harder in every aspect of life, INCLUDING INTERNATIONAL SPORT!

Where did the argument go wrong? In the second sentence.

    4/10 NOTES

The riddle represents two people that were in a relationship under two different religions

    Update posts

animal rights and slaughter houses are having a dispute over what is more morally correct

There was a recall at a slaughterhouse over the amount of pain they were causing on the animals as the farmers were torturing them

The debate at hand is if it is not fair to be portraying the farmers as criminals because it gives damage to the reputations to those farms

The farmers argument is if you see something abusive you would have said something about it

Rebuttle is about how wrong your opponent is

  2. Ad gag- an law that is designed to protect farmers, though groups that may have problems with this law and what it protects are gaged. This was seen in a television interview shown in class. This situation shows how certain arguments can be used effectively, if your paper shows two sides of an argument and you side with one side, you can use the evidence of the other sides to discredit the opposing side.

    Grammar is whammy sometimes.

    • In the video that we watched, activists go undercover to reveal the terrible abuses in slaughterhouses. That is the gist of the argument.
    • This situation is an example of AG-GAG argument. The activists are trying to expose the people behind the abuse and the people doing the abuse are/would be telling them to stop. This creates a number of arguments.
    • There is an extra-credit assignment that we could do. The assignment is to annotate and analyze the source of our choosing.
    • It is important to find the best argument that we can when looking for them.
    • Again, Sunday, April 14th is our chance to put together our 1000-word arguments. It will be a first draft and it is unlikely that our beloved professor will be able to give feedback to our assignments.
    • The purpose of the three short arguments was to put them together for our research paper. However, we should interleave the remarks to make it a smooth read.
    • “She told him she loved him” is the sentence we were looking at. The word only could be placed anywhere in that sentence and it would make sense in different contexts.
    • There is a value in naming things.

    • Riddle: A catholic and protestant couple were not allowed to be buried together, so they conjoined their graves next to each other in different cemeteries.
    • Your portfolio will contain two rewrites
    • Farmers don’t want the people who videotape what happens at the farm. The advocates want justice. Avtavosts go undercover to reveal animal cruelty.
    • You can receive extra credit by doing an analysis on the Ag-Gag topic.
    • She told him she loved him, the word only modifies the sentence depending on its placement.

-Riddle: Protestant man and Catholic women couldn’t be buried in the same graveyard, so they connected both of their tombstones, so they were connected by a little bar at the top so they could be together.

-There are different sides to the arguments of what farmers say and what animal activists say. The story is that the activists went undercover so that they could share some of the animal cruelty they have seen in a slaughterhouse. Ag-Gag laws have been published so that it is illegal to publish the results.

-Review and annotation extra credit from the sources under the ag-gag argument. Publish to the Ag-Gag category.

-3000 word research paper is due on Sunday. We need to put together the short arguments and post it under the Research category. We should not just copy and paste them all into the document because they each have an introduction and conclusion, so we have to work to make it flow better so it is a proper 3000 word essay.

-The “only” exercise taught us how one word can affect the entire meaning of a sentence. The sentence we worked with was “she told him she loved him” and we inserted only into the spaces and saw how the sentence was changed in terms of what it meant.

should the public get access to the information as to what slaughter houses do? yeah probably.

-Riddle: The two partners who really love each other passed away and wanted to get buried together but could not because of their religion. So they made a monument of them holding hands over the wall that divides them.

-AG-GAG: activists go undercover to discover animal cruelty. There are always two sides to an argument.

-Riddle: The people are most likely partners as their hands are together holding each other. It looks like the cemetery prevented them from having graves next to each other. That is most likely why the hands are held together, the hands are held to connect the partners and connect the graves together so they are technically buried together.

-Ag-Gag arguments: There are two very different sides to arguments. The argument is fleshed out in conversation between the two people. Activists went undercover to reveal cases of animal cruelty. Activists make these videos that are sent out to the public to hopefully make these slaughter houses deal with repercussions and consequences. Farmers like to say these claims by activists are false and say the activist’s footage is manipulated. Farmers think that activists main goals are to close all animal farms and make the world go vegetarian. The activists hold on to the footage for about 6 months. There is no reason to wait that long. The footage should probably be posted immediately. However, the activists most likely wanted multiple examples. Getting only one example doesn’t really do much most of the time. So waiting 6 months to release the footage shows multiple examples which has more power. Both sides make good arguments.

-Research position paper: Research position paper due Sun Apr 14. The paper is the three, one thousand word essays done throughout the semester combined into a three thousand word essay. The paper needs to be an argument. The paper needs to show evidence of significant or good research. Paper needs to include a references section.

-Syntax lesson: When placing a word in a sentence, writers should be careful to not mislead readers. Placing the word only in certain sentences in certain ways can end up leading to a possibility of six different meanings. It is good for a writer to know the meaning they want from the sentence going into it so they don’t mislead the reader. Placement of words in writing is very important.

    • The purpose of the rebuttal argument is not solely to prove your opponent wrong. Instead, it aims to illustrate the weaknesses in your opponent’s arguments by questioning their main points against your position. Additionally, it’s essential to choose a worthy opponent for your rebuttal. Arguing against an easily defeated opponent simply to showcase your knowledge may undermine your credibility with the reader.
    • Researched Persuasive Argument 3000-words – Includes our three 1000-word essays (Definiton/categorical, Causal, and Rebuttal). They do not have to be in order, perhaphs it can be ordered as: Definition Paragraph 1, Causal Paragraph 2, Rebuttal Paragraph 3 and so on. Aditionally, it is not just coping and pasting three essays. It needs to be smooth and coherent and it must also include a reference page.
    • “She told him she loved him.” – The simple rule of only is that it modifies or limits the word that follows it.

    Possible answers:

    • Only she told him that she loved him
    • She only told him that she loved him.
    • She told only him that she loved him.
    • Improving the persuasive of categories is to come up with names for definitions. It makes the definitions indisputable. We don’t owe anything until we name it.

    Riddle

    • The riddle is an image of two gravestones separated by a fence, over the fence the gravestones are connected.  The gravestones belong to a couple, they were not able to be buried in the same cemetery because they belonged to different religious denominations.

    Workshop Ag-gag argument

    • Ag-gag is short for agricultural gagging.
    • This workshop focuses on a debate between animal rights activists and food producers.  A group of animal rights activists went undercover in a farm and captured footage of what they claimed to be malpractice.  The food producers claim that this footage is out of context and that the activists’ use of the footage harms farmers.  This debate provides good examples of arguments and counterarguments which can be used in our essays.

    Syntax Lesson: Only matters

    • This lesson focused on how the placement of the word only can affect the meaning of a sentence.  The word only, modifies the word which follows it, unless it is at the end of a sentence, then it modifies the previous word.
    • While this lesson focused on the word only, these same principles can be applied to the use of other words.  One word and its placement can have a drastic effect on the meaning of a sentence.

    Invention by naming

    • Seeing different shades of green and feeling rain on your head are things that you can experience without naming them.  With that said, the act of naming them makes them easier to remember.

    A Case Study: Maintaining Control

    • “Women have to work harder in every aspect of life.” is strong way to begin an argument. If you begin an argument like this the last thing you should do is backtrack in the very next sentence by saying something along the lines of “Thankfully in today’s world, the fight for gender equality has progressed greatly.”
    • Based on reading the paragraph I came to the conclusion that the author was trying to say that gender equality has come a long way, but we still have a ways to go until we reach an ideal situation, especially in the realm of sports.  If that is what they were trying to communicate they should have started their paragraph with that claim, and spent the rest of their sentences supporting it.

Most answers are neither yes nor no answers, but rather something else.

As a result of the Ag-Gag surfacing videos, the largest meat recall in US history ensued.

Effective arguments touch upon logos, pathos, and ethos appeals.

A rebuttal argument does not provide solace to a worthy opponent.

The more credible opponent you take on, the more likely you are to gain for respect from your readers.

The 3 arguments (definition, casual, and rebuttal) are not meant to be in any type of order. Provide effective transitions between each for your 3,000 word essay, and fine tune it so there’s proper flow.

For your rewrites, let Professor know how much time you’re willing to dedicate toward them.

Based on the sentence ‘She told him she loved him,’ dependent on where the word ‘only’ is placed in the sentence, it affects the meaning of the sentence.

We don’t own our emotions until we put them into language that’s itemized (i.e. it is more effective to give something a name to more succinctly describe/recall it).

    Feedback is a conversation.

    • Riddle | A couple of different religions, A Catholic (woman) and a protestant (man), were not able to be buried in the same graveyard due to being categorized by their faiths. Their marriage was seen as taboo. To combat this, a custom tombstone was made to connect the two from different sides of the graveyard wall.
    • Workshop: Aq-Gag Arguments: Should activists be targeted with Ag-Gag Laws?? Activists go undercover trying to expose the people who contribute to the abuse endured. This results in farmers not wanting people who record present at their farms.  After some discourse, Ag-Gag laws were released, making it illegal to publish what was recorded.
    • Research Position Paper: The 3,000-word essay is due on Sunday 14, 2024. This paper will consist of three, one thousand worded essays previously written (Definition, causal, and rebuttal) and needs to be an argument. The final essay has to be smooth, clear, and include a reference page.
    • Syntax Lesson | Only Matters: The purpose was to show students why word placement matters and how it could change the context of a sentence. The exercise involved students changing the placement of the word “only” to see the new sentences created by doing so. Wrong word placement could confuse the readers and mislead them about what you’re trying to say.
