For most of you, today is a class day like any other. But for some, it’s a day of consequence.

Today is the day you decide between the consequences of
1) withdrawing from the course, or 2) continuing in the hope of passing without credit, or
3) committing to complete all your incomplete coursework within the next 16 days,
by WED APR 24, the Drop-Dead Portfolio Deadline.

Your beloved professor heartily endorses your decision
unless you fail to decide and silently accept an F.

You don’t have to do that.

    • Riddle | Simple Arithmetic:   A riddle was done for the purpose of warning students to be careful of reading other’s arguments, it’s easy to draw false conclusions based on what’s given. 
    • Wake Up| How to Fix a Slogan: Were weren’t improving science teaching, we’re working to help improve efforts. An in class activity showed us students how making a slogan clear and improved can eliminate confusion and misleading constructed conclusions. 
    • The Portfolio: Students need to have the necessary eight pieces of written work in their final CCII portfolio. Student choose which two of the three essays can go inside their portfolio. The portfolio should include, A visual rhetoric assignment, an annotated biliography (10-15 sources), The reflective statement, Short argument 1 + the rewrite, A second Short arguments + rewrite, Research position paper.
      • This Is due before the very last class, Wednesday April 24, 2024. A double check of the portfolio will be induced and then you can confirm the day and time of the final zoom meeting. This meeting will conform of the student and teacher discussing final grades. 
      • Revisions could be made to posted works after the given deadline.
      • Final Grades will be submitted FRI MAY 03.
    • Sources Workshop 2: If you gather a lot of sources that contradict your own, youre wasting time. The job is to point out how wrong they are. After posting the rebuttal argument into your portfolio, create a rewrite so that feedback can be given. 
    • Portfolio Task | Research Position Paper: Will be due before class Sunday, April 14, 2024. Include references, Title your post research – username, Publish your definition essay in the Research Paper category, Username category, and your Portfolio—Username category.

    The simple arithmetic exercise displays that a good arguer has the ability to take a few small facts and lead the reader to an incorrect conclusion.

    The NSTA slogan isn’t improving science teaching, only ‘helping’ improve science teaching efforts.

    Claims need to robust enough to demonstrate something is happening. That would be worthy of a thesis statement.

    Emphasize what you accomplish, not what you’re hoping for.

    Our portfolio requires 8 final pieces of work — needs to be in portfolio before class on April 24th.

    In the references section, the only thing you include are the sources you cited in the paper.

    In the bibliography section, what you should include is every piece of work you consulted.

    The job of your rebuttal argument is to find what is wrong with your adversaries’ counterarguments.

    Blog posts produce reflex reactions — it sparks kneejerk reactions, rather than well thought out ones.

    Find historical examples that are analogous if you’re still looking for sources for your rebuttal argument.

    • A good arguer can present us with little facts that seem to add up to a logical elution but it doesn’t.
    • NSTA logo: It doesn’t bring about the ultimate goal which is more learning. Your claims are often not as robust as they need to be to get something happening. Find something worthy of claiming, find a good thesis. If we can prove something with evidence that makes our essay so much better.
    • By April 25, you need to have a completed portfolio. 2 of your 3 essays must go into your portfolio.  
    • Researched Persuasive argument: 3000 words, 6-9 references, you do not need to put all of the sources you used in your paper in your bibliography, only if you referenced them in your paper do you need to put them in your references part.

    -Rebuttal argument: A writer can lead the reader to erroneous conclusions by using the writing in their work to make the readers go to or draw those conclusions.

    -Riddle: Bad conclusions can be drawn without thought going into the conclusions. When thought is put into those conclusions, actual answers supported by the facts can be found.

    -How to fix a slogan: The NSTA has slogan does not clarify in any way if science teaching has improved. They are not even trying to improve science teaching, they are simply working to help improve science teaching efforts. This proves nothing. This shows that there is a possibility that nothing has improved yet and its been over 15 years. They want to show results, not even work at that. The ultimate goal, would be more science learning.

    -The Portfolio: Portfolio requirements: Two short argumentative essays, with an earlier draft for each essay, a visual rhetoric assignment. A annotated bibliography. All entries on the bibliography must be used in the essays. The final research position argument is also due in the portfolio as well as a final reflective statement to show students have learned the course expectations for the core values. Revisions can be done to the portfolio until the final portfolio conference.

    -Withdraw or P/NC: Today is the final day in which students can decide if they want to drop or withdraw from the course or they can continue in trying to pass the class. All work for the class is due Apr 24 which is the drop-dead portfolio deadline. The professor endorses any of the decisions as long as students don’t fail to decide and accept a bad grade.

    Simple Arithmetic : Provide lots of facts that lead to an almost obvious conclusion. However the conclusion is false. These examples can be found to easily mislead the reader.

    Portfolio: All portfolio requirements can be found on this link. Deadline is April 24th. Once this date passes you can schedule a conference for a final grade review conference with the professor. You are able to make changes to your portfolio until this conference / final grade. Grade conferences are the same process as all other conferences that were held during the semester.

    Researched Persuasive Argument: The large 3000 word essay due, Sunday April 14th. We will most likely not be able to receive feedback on this post, unless posted earlier.

    Rebuttal Sources – The purpose of this short argument is not to point out the other point of view and its strong argument. You are to prove that argument wrong, therefore giving yourself more credibility.

    • The slogan for the National Science Teachers Association is pretty stupid and misleading. The slogan says that they are trying to help to improve science teaching. 
    • The in-class task for the slogan assignment was to create a better mission statement for them. 
    • On Wednesday, April 24, we will be doing a portfolio check to make sure we have eight items to turn in. 
    • Two of those three essays that we have written go into the portfolio. We get to pick which two go into the portfolio. 
    • For each short essay, an early work and a revised work will be provided in the portfolio to show the responsiveness to revisions. 
    • Again, the deadline for our portfolio is April 24th.
    • We can still make revisions after the deadline, but we can only do so before our portfolio is looked at and read. 
    • After the double-check of the portfolio, we will be able to schedule the conference. 
    • The Researched Persuasive argument is a 3000-word assignment that we need for the portfolio. 
    • It’ll be in first-draft form. 
    • We have to have a conference by April 15th, 2024. 
    • All it takes is inspiration and finding what has been scholarly studied. That is something that we can use if we can’t find something relevant for our sources.

    -A good argument is present with little details and facts that lead up to a logical conclusion, but then doesn’t, which then leads us to not drawing a conclusion. 

    -The riddle today was solving 4 simple arithmetic problems and seeing if we could figure them out even though the facts are clear, but we could be misled- just like how our writing can be for our arguments. 

    -The National Science Teachers Association slogan is not clear, and does not share what they have accomplished since 2008. There is no bragging about the ultimate goal which is better teaching and more learning. If the slogan was more direct and had straight facts, then it is more worthy compared to one that is not direct. 

    -The portfolio has to contain 8 pieces in their final portfolio. Two out of the three short essays are going into the portfolio, along with the rewrites. 

    -Researched Persuasive Argument is the 3000 words we have come up with as a total from our 3 short essays, with 3-9 sources, and 10-15 sources in the annotated bibliography. This is due Sunday April 14th

    -The rebuttal argument is to find sources and point out why they are wrong. In order to find better sources we need to look at sources that are respectfully studied and acknowledged. The inspiration of finding out what has been scholarly studied is important so that you are getting valid information.

    Riddle:There can be bad conclusions drawn without thought going into the conclusion. When someone is trying to put thought into those conclusions. The answers can be found and supported by the facts in the writing

    -Try and show what you are actually trying to do in a slogan. Show what the actual goal is, do not brag in a slogan because it will turn readers off. Also proving that your stuff is actually worth it.

    • It should focus on showing real results, not just efforts.
    1. Portfolio Requirements:
    • Your portfolio needs eight pieces of work, like essays and a bibliography.
    • Make sure to use all your sources in your essays.
    • You can make changes to your portfolio until the final conference.
    1. Withdrawal or Pass/No Credit Option:
    • You can decide to drop the class or switch to Pass/No Credit.
    • But you need to decide before April 24 to avoid failing.
    • Finish all your work by April 24 to stay on track.

    the core of our rebuttal argument is to use our opposition’s points to strengthen our own either through moral fortitude( their morals don’t align with your own) or a logical fallacy. And we should be disputing these points with our strongest oppositional arguments.
    also we need to publish rewrites

    -In class we did an assignment called simple arithmetic which was a lesson for us because we can mislead very easily from what we are supposed to know or do.

    -A slogan and name of your slogan should portray the goal that you are trying to compete or achieve in the long run. We were able to rewrite a slogan for the NSTA program because their slogan was not too clear on what they wanted to achieve.

    -We are required to have 8 pieces to our final portfolio, also rewrites for a few of the essays that have been done by us. Deadline is Wed April 24 which we are required to one into class to do a portfolio double check and will confirm in class your grade conference. Revisions are also allowed even after the deadline

    • When reading other arguments there could be conclusions that mislead away from the claim 
    • To be a good arguer you have to use basic facts and run them to a logical conclusion, not a lousy or manipulative person who leads to erroneous conclusions. 
    • In the slogan NTSA, the sign is too dull without showing anything. Changing it with fewer words or target8ing a specific audience makes it more attractive 
    • You must place 8 pieces into your portfolio 
    • 3 essays go into the portfolio and you can pick which ones 
    • The dead line is april 24th 
    • Type of essay write and rewrite have to be idtentical just revised

    A good arguer can present us with simple facts or claims that seem to add up to a logical conclusion but mislead us to draw bad conclusions. We need to avoid at all costs leading people to erroneous conclusions based on how we set them to draw those conclusions. The skills required are the same but the conscious behind it is what changes.

    8 pieces in our final CCII Portfolio – 2 revised arguments (definition/rebuttal/causal), Bibliography (10 to 15 sources), Visual Rewrite, Reflection statement, Researched Persuasive Argument.

    Riddle: simple arithmetic

    • This riddle gave us several questions which were difficult to answer due to their wording.  This was done to give us examples of how an arguer can guide someone to a seemingly logical conclusion based on false evidence.

    How to Fix a Slogan

    • Working to Help Improve Science Teaching Efforts since 2008.
    • “Working to help” implies something is not working.
    • A good slogan should be short and in no way imply anything negative about the organization it belongs to.

    Portfolio

    • Must contain eight pieces.
    • Must contain rewrites.
    • Three essays must go into the portfolio

    Sources Workshop

    • The example was of a student who was trying to research a paper.  The problem was that the search terms related to his topic were too recent for there to be any scholarly articles on them.
    • If you find yourself in a similar situation, looking to the past for an analogous topic may provide you with relevant sources.

    Fixing a slogan— NTSA: slogan says alot of words but doesnt say much. Slogan is “working to help improve science teaching efforts since 2008”, theyre working to help, they dont even have that. You need to brag in your slogan, about what youre club or association offers. 

    April 24th- portfolio double check!!!!!

    We should have 8 pieces in our portfolio

    Research persuasive argument- 3000 words, references sections(6-9), composed of content from your 3 arguements. 

    Job for RA- is to talk about how wrong they are.
