A SMALL EXERCISE ASSIGNMENT:

  • Read The Skincare Definition Argument by a former student schoolcookiemonster.
  • Consider its strengths, but read critically, being alert to anything you find confusing or unpersuasive.
  • For examples of feedback already provided on the argument, consult The Skincare Definition Workshop.
  • On the Argument page, leave a Reply offering praise and criticism. Don’t forget the criticism. Writers don’t get better without honest appraisals from their readers.

    • Street signs: street signs are proposal arguments because it’s giving you a command and you have to decide yourself whether appealing to the command would benefit you or not. Even if the consequences are spelled out, it’s still your choice if you want to make the decision or not.
    • Riddle: The unclear sign says “Please keep door closed”. The person posting the sign didn’t realize that a door opening and closing was its whole purpose. The wording is important because if you don’t say what you mean, people will just look over it.
    • The Braille riddle: Like braille, if you don’t know how to read or approach something, you find it difficult to follow or understand what’s trying to be said.

street signs are proposal arguments because they are proposing you to do something.

please keep door closed doesn’t mean don’t open it, it means to prop it open or like hold it open.

Please keep door closed: the wording should be changed for better explanation.

-Street signs are proposal arguments. A command stop is an argument, and we have to calculate that consequence, and respond accordingly.

-Riddle: Please keep the door closed. The sign was written not thinking how doors necessarily work. You could change the wording of this sign to make it make more sense for its use. The maker of this sign would be trying to prevent people keeping the door open, or propping the door open.

    • Street signs are proposal arguments because the signs themselves are commands. It means to obey or disobey and then respond accordingly.
    • It is all about a deal that you make with the command.
    • If the consequences are laid out then we still have the choice.
    • In the riddle, the text that is originally on the door isn’t clear. People are going to use the door, so the sign could be rewritten in many ways. The sign could instead say “Please keep door closed unless entering and exiting.”
    • The part of the ground that changes before walking onto the street is for blind people so they know the road is coming up. It is like braille for your feet.
    • We only need a visual rewrite not a visual rhetoric.
    • There is also a portfolio category that some our assignments will go in.

-Streets signs are proposal arguments because there are consequences that are behind the command. You do not have to follow the proposal on the sign, but there might be consequences of you not following it.

Please keep door closed- reword meaning—-”close door after leaving”

-trying to prevent people from propping door open

    1. Street Signs Are Like Proposals: They give commands, but you choose whether to follow them or not. You weigh the consequences yourself.
    2. Clear Communication Is Key: If instructions aren’t clear, people might not understand or follow them. That’s why wording matters.
    3. Braille Example Shows Difficulty in Understanding: Just like with Braille, if something isn’t clear, it’s hard to understand or follow.
    4. Rewording the Sign: Instead of saying “Please keep door closed,” it could be clearer as “Close door after leaving.” This makes it obvious what you need to do and why, like preventing the door from being propped open.

-Street signs are proposal arguments: Street signs suggest a person to do an action or proposal the sign says. The person does not have to follow this proposal on the sign. However, if they do not follow what the sign says there could be consequences. Depending upon what happens because of not following the sign, the consequences could be huge. The word stop on a stop sign is a command to examine the consequences if a person does not stop. The person is making a deal with the command. The sign says what to do while there is potential consequences behind the command.

-Riddle: Does not understand doors: The door’s sign is not worded correctly. The wording should be something like Don’t hold door open. This is the message the sign wants to get across. People must have been keeping that door open or else the sign most likely would not have been put up. There must have been a problem without that door for the sign to be put on it.

-Braille riddle: Braille is very unique as it is its own alphabet in a way. It can be very hard for it to be used as one letter could throw off the person potentially. The riddle is asking the question why is there braille at the drive-thru window? This could be in case the drive-thru allows the people to get out of their cars to be able to feel the menu. If that is not the case then it is useless. It does in a way defeat the purpose of the drive-thru though as they would have to get out of the car and take their time trying to figure out what they want and where it is on the menu.

Much of class time was taken up by a debate or more accurately a discussion between the professor and some students on the topic of forgiveness.  Both the professor and the students agreed that they would forgive anyone but for entirely different reasons.  The students reason was grounded in faith and a belief that god forgives everyone.  The professor’s reasoning was based on their beliefs in free will or lack thereof.

    Street signs are proposal arguments

    • A street sign that says stop, is making a proposal for you to stop your car.
      • The reader’s likelihood of listening to the proposal argument is dependent on the credibility of the person or entity making the proposal.

    Riddle: Does Not Understand Doors

    • The  sign reads “Please keep door closed.”  if this sign were to be followed literally it would defeat the purpose of having a door.
    • The author’s actual intention was likely to prevent people from holding or propping the door open.  To more effectively communicate this the sign should read “Don’t hold door open.” or “Don’t prop door open.”

The red thing in the image is for blind people.  The idea is that when they step on it, they will feel it and know that there is a crossing ahead.

    The Braille Riddle

    • Braille is an alphabet for blind people.
    • Braille does everything with six dots.  Each letter is represented by a different combination of dots.
    • Braille is a very interesting thing to know about.  I imagine that this riddle was going to be related somehow to a central idea of today’s lesson, but because we got sidetracked that Idea did not reveal itself.

    Visual rewrite

    • Our visual rhetoric assignment does not go in our portfolio, our visual rewrite will.

    • Street signs can be arguments because you can say that it says no parking here or you will be towed for parking here, you can argue that yeah i’m not supposed. To park here but who is checking or is someone looking out at that parking spot ready to call the tow truck.
    • Riddle- The person who put that sign knows that doors open and close but still puts a sign there to keep the door closed. Their intention is for people to keep the door closed but it seems that the post is there intending for people to keep the door closed because maybe people keep leaving the door open.

    Notes 3/25

    • Forgiveness is based off the set of circumstances for the persons
    • Street signs are proposal arguments
    • Street signs are the idea of knowing the possible consequences and continuing to do them
    • You could reject that reason and continue to do what you planned instead of the proposal argument
    • It is very difficult to create the braille language that involves every number and letter from the alphabet
    • Every needs to produce a visual rewrite so professor can correct it

    – Riddle- The riddle talks about keeping the door closed, but by keeping a door closed it completely loses its purpose which is to open and close the doors. A door that is kept closed is not a door.

Street signs are proposal arguments because they present the idea of a consequence being present for not following the sign. It is up to the person to decide whether they’ll follow the sign or elect to ignore it. The more credible the argument the more likely they’ll be to listen as the consequences have validation behind them.
