If you haven’t already:

  1. Upload an image from your device to use as your WordPress avatar for the blog.
    • Click the Profile circle in the upper-right corner of the blog, near the Write button.
    • Update your Profile picture with anything you can grab.
    • While you’re here, you can edit your Display Name, too (for example, by removing the numbers from Fatboy345 to just Fatboy).
  2. Make your Appointment for your first Mandatory Professor Conference.
  3. Add your Hypothesis post to two Categories (the My Hypothesis category and your own Username).
  4. Log in to the blog every class period and record your Class Notes as Replies to the daily Agenda page.

Feedback Please

    • Add your post to the Feedback Please category to solicit feedback from your Professor.
    • You’ll receive a Reply directly at your post.
      • Do not ask for Feedback unless you’re committed to revising your work.
    • Put yourself back into Feedback Please following any significant revisions.
    • Repeat as necessary.
    • If you think I should create a 2-minute “How To” video for Feedback Please, leave me a reminder in your Notes below this page.

Class Notes

I grade your Class Notes every day, not because I want to control your life but because Class Notes are small arguments, worthy of grading. They demonstrate that you were critically analyzing a text (everything I say or show), that you processed the information you were offered, and that you synthesized the new information into your understanding of the world by turning that new information into bold claims of your own. That’s the bulk of the course right there. So . . . gradable evidence of your writing ability.

    – “Be proud of your ideas but not arrogant” Become comfortable with the idea that things will change and what is better is not always best. Doubt what we grew up knowing and are accustomed to.
    – First drafts can be beautiful but it’s not our best work; there is room for improvement, and asking for feedback is indispensable. We will add our posts to the feedback please category so that Mister Dave can provide feedback. Asking for feedback will lead to significant feedback and it is our responsibility to make significant revisions.
    – Class notes are essentially small arguments; we take in what is said during class, synthesize it, and then transcribe what was learned. Don’t regurgitate what exactly happened during class or even what we read; make the distinction between what happened vs what was claimed.
    – Checking the deadlines drop-down list will keep us updated on upcoming assignments and can avoid future stress or surprises.
    – “Why is there no such thing as a group of bi-partisan legislators” No single legislator can be bipartisan. It’s imperative that we look to make sure our wording means what we want it to and won’t lead people to different conclusions.
    – Google Scholar can provide more clear and concise articles that better add to the conversation. Adding or subtracting words will narrow the amount of results.

  2. -we went over some housekeeping things such as profile pictures and class notes. The professor also went over our feedback please page
    – the professor also highlights the importance of progressing after first drafts. This is due to first drafts being the foundation of a great paper.
    – The professor also said that the class notes could be completed even if that person did not go to class. He also highlights the importance of explaining what we’ve learned in our class notes. Later in the class the professor also states the importance of reviewing what the author claims in order to not waste one’s words. So that our work may be purposeful. I guess in this sense the professor wants us to display emotion in our class notes, it’s the easiest way to get to know one’s writing style and opinions.
-The riddle for today highlights the absurdity of the bi-partisan system. That one person can’t be from both parties. This is because both parties stand for such different values and beliefs and such that if a person stands for both they stand for nothing. You can’t stand for the right’s of women while also standing for the desire to go back to a time where only rich white men had rights.
-There was a spotlight also placed onto google scholar as a better platform to get information for our thesis’s.
-there was a story that the professor talked about where a black man from south Africa doubted the ability of two black pilots due to the man’s internalized racism that was likely instilled in him from a very young age. Along with that comes the discussion of the song Kiss By A Rose by SEAL where SEAL reveals they the man didn’t know that his song, categorized as pop, couldn’t have a full orchestra in the song. This then reinforces the nature of going on a fox hunt without the goal of finding a fox. In this case SEAL didn’t even know he was on a fox hunt.
-We also highlighted the incentivizing of moral obligation through monetization. An example of this would be a fine on littering, now there is a price to pay for a lapse in morals. So now it’s no longer a feeling one gets in their gut due to their personal reservations, no it’s negated by the amount of money they have. This way the only people this system truly punishes those who don’t have the means to lapse in these monetized morals.

—I would never have thought to describe “purposeful” as “emotional,” but now that you’ve suggested the idea, I say YES, for our purposes especially, as a class devoted to nurturing writing talent: YES, I hope you’ll choose to research and write about something that makes you emotional.

First drafts are not possibly your best work because they are like confetti. They can never be your best work because they will or can always get better and there’s always room for improvement.
Asking for feedback is a must and the professor will always be happy to help you and help improve your grade but do not ask for it unless you’re actually wanting to fix your work.
Class notes can be arguments because you are criticizing and they are really just like little writing assignments that could help bring your grade up or you can do if you missed a day of school.
We talked about how you are properly supposed to write when you are making class notes and making them good as well. Some class notes are short and simple but that will not get you a good graded rather you should go in depth with it so you ge a better chance of a good grade
Riddle Bi-partisan meaning two and party if you split the words apart. There can’t be a group of bi partisan because there is no legislation that is bi partisan but rather you could say there could be a bi partisan group which would be more understandable and better to understand.
If you haven’t worked on your assignment on the Stone money project you should start because its due this Sunday and very important to read the article and listen to the podcast to learn more about it.

Be willing to doubt whatever it is you’re committed to.

Beautiful drafts cannot possibly be your best work.

This is a re-writing class; first drafts are useful, but far from a finished product.

Feedback creates a contract; if Professor Hodges puts in an hour, you must as well.

Class notes are arguments, a demonstration of what you critically analyzed from what was said or shown from your own perspective.

What the author talked about is a summarization whereas what the author claimed is an argument.

The legislator riddle explained the fact that there’s no such thing as a bi-partisan legislator because a group of members can be bi-partisan legislators, but an individual cannot.

Google scholar is a more valuable technique for obtaining sources as opposed to standard google because you can define the time range in your search (e.g., articles pertaining to any time after 2020), you can check out citations from a source you like in order to create your next set of sources and googles scholar generally filters out uncredentialed works.

From the brief mention of ‘Kiss from a Rose’ by Seal, my takeaway is that sophistication is unchartered territory, an ignorance to the confines of society’s rules.

My takeaway from the mention of the Israeli daycare center was that financial incentives don’t work unless you stretch the opposition beyond their means. Morals will almost always triumph money in regard to modifying behavior.

The Wayback Machine is helpful for obtaining articles to link(s) that no longer works/inaccessible.

-Quote of the day meaning: The things you are most intrigued in now will most likely abandon you. You have to be ready to doubt the things you are extremely committed to.

-WordPress posts should be added under the necessary categories, in the case of “My Hypothesis” assignment, it should be placed under your name and the “My Hypothesis” categories.

-First drafts can be great, but they definitely won’t be your best work. The way to better your drafts is to ask for feedback. There is a “Feedback Please” category to add your post to in order to request feedback from the professor. If you ask for feedback you must be committed to align revisions.

-Class Notes : These should display what you LEARNED, not just replicate what’s on the agenda.

-Author Talked About vs. claimed: The first excerpt doesn’t help at all however the second claim displays an attitude toward the subject and gets more specific as to what observations were made.

Todays Riddle – “Why is there no such thing as a group of bi-partisan legislators?” – You can’t be a bi-partisan legislator, however there is such a thing as a bi-partisan group of legislators.

-Google Scholar can be a useful tool to weed out all unnecessary items in a normal Google search such as sponsored items. This is useful because you can remove keywords and add keywords using – and +.

    – Stone Money isn’t something that we need to revise. We are going to ask for feedback on things that must be revised. We can get feedback on everything we post to get our grades changed.
    – Please leave a “How To” video on feedback.
    – Our class notes are little arguments that we take and submit. We analyze, react, and critique the information that is given to us. Then it is just rewritten in our own words.
    – “What the Author talked about” and “What the Author claimed” are very different. The claim shows that there is an attitude included in the writing. When just talking about it, it is just a summary of the information that was collected.
    – Class notes can make a difference to our final grades. They are one of the only ways to tweak content-based publications.
    – Today’s riddle, “Why is there no such thing as a group of bi-partisan legislators?”
    – The riddle means that there is no such thing as a bi-partisan legislator. This means that there can’t be a group of bi-partisan legislators because there is no such thing as a bi-partisan legislator.

There are other ideas or beliefs to be discovered that could possibly change what one believes in. The notion people believe in is that the way things are done are the best possible way to do them. People don’t believe there is a possibility of better beliefs but there is also no effort from them to see if it is true.

-Feedback Please: First drafts can not be a person’s best work. First drafts can be very good. They are not the best though. The course is a rewriting course. It values rewriting work. Drafts should be more than 1. If a student wants feedback, the work has to be put into the feedback please category on the post.Feedback can be asked for as long as the student is committed to revising the work when feedback is given. Following revisions, the work can go back into the feedback please category again.
-Class notes: Class notes are graded because they are similar to small writing assignments. Notes show the ability of a person to analyze or critically think about information the person is given. Notes show how a person processes the information that was shown turning them into works of the person’s thoughts or ideas on the notes. Notes should be a difference. What happened is different then what the person learned. Showing a understanding of what happened is way better then what the person simply just learns. Copying the notes on the agenda word for word is simply what the student learned, not what actually happened. There is a difference between what was talked about and what was claimed.
-Riddle: Why is there no such thing as a group of bi-partisan legislators? A commission can be bi-partisan. The members can not be bi-partisan themselves. There is no such thing as a bi-partisan legislator. There can be a group of bi-partisan group of legislators because that would be multiple legislators of different parties together.
-Google scholar: Google scholar can be very useful when writing academic papers or looking for research. Unless the study is a topic of the moment, it can be found with better results on google scholar. The results on google aren’t necessarily bad but there is a lot more useless sources useless information on google. Google scholar is used by other scholars and cares about peer review so the sources are constantly updated and get better. Searches on scholar can be narrowed down. Topics can be added or taken away to make a search result better for the person. It helps to find the exact topic a person can be looking for.

Celebrating your brilliance is my job because I love you. Yours is to doubt your deepest beliefs and, with luck, to find your ridiculous”- myfavoriteprofessordavidbdale. What I learned from this quote is that we need to give ourselves credit for our work, but know that it can always improve and to have an open mind to finding new ideas.
-As humans oftentimes once we are stuck on an idea, it is hard to see that other ideas could be correct. As for our hypothesis, it will most likely change due to seeing other ideas that are out there and realizing that other ideas could be better.
-I learned why it is important to have our assignments submitted under the right type of categories so that it can clear up confusion as to if things were submitted and can be found easier.
-First drafts are called first drafts for a reason. Professor Hodges made it clear that he does not value first drafts, and that we need to take his feedback and apply it to our writing. Each draft should get better and better til it is near perfect.
-For each hour that Professor Hodges spends on our feedback, is the amount of time we need to spend on our revisions.
-The class notes are important because they are showing how we are analyzing what the professor is saying and making it our own by synthesizing the information. We are telling what we learned in class that day through these notes, not just summarizing the information.
-Riddle of the day: “Why is there no such thing as a group of bi-partisan legislator?” Bi-partisan is two parties, which is what he has. We have a Republican party and Democratic party. There is no bi-partisan legislature since they would be in both parties. What there can be is a bi-partisan group of legislators.
-Google Scholar is important to use for academic work since it brings up less results than normal google and filters out the excess sources that may not be the best. I learned that as we are doing more intense writing we need to start using Google Scholar since the sources coming up on there are more academic and professional. There are no news stories or videos, just straight articles which would make it easier to find good sources.
-I learned that you can add and subtract words from the search bar on Google. I never knew that you could narrow your search and filter out what you do not want or do want from your results. This is going to make getting sources a lot easier because now I can filter it to exactly what I want to look up.

-The deadline Menu: TUE FEB 06: “Purposeful Summaries” Exercise
Riddle: “why is there no such thing as a group of bipartisan legislators?” Bi mean two, in this context a legislature cannot be apart of 2 parties, there’s no such thing.

-Google Scholar: This tool helps narrow down academic sources that better help writing. Regular google search engine is full of promoted information, doesn’t mean they are totally accurate or peer reviewed. Even if you’re only interested in specific pieces of information, google scholar helps provide narrowed down information. Once you find sources that you like, use them to create another set of prized sources.

-Doubt the Pilots: His method was forgiving generations for repression as long as people were opened to new ideas, willing to make change.
He was proud to see black people driving the plane, but saw himself ashamed that he called their abilities into question when his life was at stake.
Seal’s hit, “Kiss from a rose” had a good explanation, he didn’t know people couldn’t do these things in a pop song. A lesson is when we try to share insight, talking about something not familiar.

-10 Shekels for lateness: start charging a fee for being late, would it encourage for people to come on time? Or does it depend on how much it costs? As soon as you take incentive out of something, you have to price right because people won’t think it’s important.

    – Wildlife lover are threatening wildlife: The endangered whooping cranes can be moved by making a model and lead them somewhere safer. 6 of the 13 whooping cranes were shot because of vandalizers. The whole intention of saving turned into failure because of ignorance.

    – Counterintuitive assignment, stone money: Listen to the three podcasts, look on the blog for the rest
    – Podcast will take an hour to listen to, the 5 page article would take about 5 minutes to read. Has your perspective changed on money after listening and reading? Use 2 other sources besides the podcast and article. Reference section will be needed in APA style. Professor prioritizes the knowledge about the known behavior, the people, how fluid is the values of money.

Wow. You’ve mentioned so many details that don’t appear in anybody else’s Notes, NatureChild!
I want to talk about this:

      – Feedback: Add your post to the feedback please category to obtain feedback with professor. First drafts will never be your best works. (Not required) Stone money you can’t revise and feedback would be brief, only revisions can be made if the student is committed. If you make substantial revisions, you can ask for a better grade.

—I knew when I said it that I had been confusing about Feedback on Stone Money.
—Here’s the real deal: 1) Everything you publish to the blog is eligible for feedback, revision, and regrading; 2) You may ask for Feedback on Stone Money, and receive it; 3) By asking for Feedback on anything, you are committing to spend as much time revising your work as I do commenting on it; 4) At least two short arguments (The Definition, The Causal, The Rebuttal) MUST receive Feedback and Revision. Those two short arguments will go into your Portfolio alongside their first drafts.

      I hope that’s clearer.

Be proud of your ideas but do not be arrogant

A lot of the things you feel strongly about now will change over time

Make sure to add your My Hypothesis under the My Hypothesis category!

First drafts do not matter at all, they are not your best work ni matter how much work is put into them.

Always ask for feedback. Make sure to respond to the feedback do not ignore it.

    Class notes are arguments.

The main point is to speak on a claim not what the author talked about. That shows there was thinking being done and effort placed in notes. claim= purposeful summary

Work on stone money, it is due Sunday.

Use Google Scholar to get in touch with the material

When searching for things on Google Scholar make sure to search for specifics

    Must have a reference section

For writing he is not looking for a critique of the quality of how the writing was, no judgement just examine the thinking behavior of the people.

Course is a rewriting couse. Professor doesnt really value first drafts. They can be beautiful, but couldnt possibly be your best work, no matter how hard you try. If we want feedback, we can post to the “feedback please” category. We shouldnt ask unless we really want to revise and and are comitted. It creates a contract , “If I put in an hour, you should also spend at least and hour on revising it”. You can improve grade on anything you post.

Class notes are very important, theyre basically little writing assignments. They demonstrate that you are analyzing the text, you processed the information and paying attention. Bulk of course is receiving new info, analyzying and synthezing the information. Learned about good vs bad notes. Instead of saying ‘we got into groups and learned about stone money”, actually explain what happened when in groups. Also discussed “what the author talked about” vs “what the author claimed”. “What the author talked about” wasted words that didnt explain anything. He showed example which showed how a great post should be.

Todays riddle— “why is there no such thing as a group of bi-partisan legislators
    “Bi”: means two
    partisan: parties
So two parties: bi- partisan. You cant be bi-partisan by yourself, theres no such thing as a bi-partisan because you have to pick a side. There can be a group of bi-partisans because each person in group might have different side.

Discussed google scholar- Its important to use it because it will give us great sources for our writing. Google scholar will give you articles that are useful. It’s articles that have been cited, peer reviewed. We should be using it for our writing pieces moving forward. Google scholar allows you to filter throught the articles so you can find that really specific article/ information you’re looking for. If you get down to 100-200 sources once filtered throught, thats ideal and beneficial.

      —Not true.
—There can’t be a group of bi-partisans because nobody is bi-partisan.
—But there can be a bi-partisan group because a group can contain members of both parties.

-The professor showed us one of his own quotes. He wants us to be willing to criticize our own Ideas and question our own viewpoints.

-Our hypothesis should be in two categories, My hypothesis, and the author’s name. This is to make our hypothesis easier to find on the blog.

-The professor went over the importance of first drafts. No matter how good it is, it can and should always be revised.

-Some assignments like stone money can be revised but are not necessary, only ask for feedback if you are certain you will revise it.

-The Riddle of the day asked us why there is no such thing as a bi-partisan Legislature. The answer was that an individual legislature cannot be bi-partisan. This riddle was fun and a good thinking exercise in regards to paying close attention to words, however, I did not see what if anything he was trying to teach us with this.

-Google Scholar is useful for weeding out sponsored and non-academic results, it can also be used to filter out topics.

-The Professor showed us some stories he had collected in what he called a counterintuitive journal, each story provided an example of something counterintuitive, for example, the story of the whooping crane conservationists who accidentally got several whooping cranes killed in an attempt to save the species. All of these stories were interesting, however I am unsure what I learned from them.

Not taking for granted that a fine for prohibited behavior will reduce that behavior is an exercise in critical reading and thinking. Not taking for granted that a piece for piano requires the pianist to touch the keys is an exercise in not taking anything for granted. Not accepting what appears to be real and settled in our culture is the best way I know to crack open thinking and create ideas worth investigating. I’d like to create an atmosphere for writers that values imagination and skepticism. I think you are a student who will run with that opportunity. If trying to figure out what somebody else thought you might learn from a provocative premise helps you to an insight, go with it. Whatever it is. Thanks for questioning.

The things you stand on most securely now are likely to abandon you and you need to be prepared for it.

You need to find every week spot in persuasive writing, that is what will help you build it to be something great.

Davidbdale; Professor Hodges’s father’s name is Dale, and his mother went by B, so he has used this name throughout his life, it is important to him.

This is a rewriting course, first drafts are not really valued. The professor wants you to take his notes from your first draft and turn it into something greater. No matter how much work you put into your first draft it is never going to be your best work.
Feedback creates a contract, if the professor is putting in time, you need to put in the same amount. You are never required to redo an assignment but you are always invited to.

You can receive a 3/3 on the class notes even if you are not in class, as long as you pay close attention to the agenda.

Riddle: Bi: means two, Partisan: means parties; Republican and Democrat parties. There is no such thing as a group bipartisan legislature, no one legislature can be bi-partisan, however, there is such thing as a bipartisan group of legislators.

Google Scholar weeds out a lot of the stuff you don’t want to use in your essay, the false stuff. It gives you more academic credibility. You can narrow your search by using the – key and the + key to add and take out words. This will give you more tailored websites for what you are looking for.

Stone money is due before midnight sunday night and should be 1,000 words.

Your description of the Bi-Partisan legislator confuses legislator with legislature.

A Legislator is a person who passes legislation. A person who makes laws.
A Legislature is a group of legislators.

While individual legislators loudly protested, the New Jersey Legislature passed the “No Sexting on the Beach” law.

    Wednesday January 31st , 2024 AGENDA NOTES

Be able to be proud of your ideas but not to be arrogant , things you feel very strongly about may not be true and may change your personal opinion on it, with growth you will change.

We learned how to make a profile picture and how to change the username to something without the numbers at the end.

I learned how to place a meetings in our class to discuss with our teacher ,I learned that I need to post another discussion to post my hypothesis today

I learned you can only fold a piece of paper 7 times as well as first drafts are not your best work and cant possibly be your best work.

You need to always ask for feedback and it creates a contract showing of putting an hour each into doing the assignment.

Class notes are arguments , class notes are the understanding of a claim or reaction. You follow how you react towards it.

The difference between good notes and bad notes are how you explain to someone what you did compared to what you learned. Where the author claims and learns is something very important that gives you the best insight on what to learn.

A claim is a purposeful summary of what is said and shown in evidence. We also must work on a stone money essay before SUNDAY.

B-i partisan is a political party that is from two partys together as one. There can’t be bi-partisan legislators because there is no group of bi-partisan legislatures.

By adding words to separate your articles apart you are able to look up on google scholar many ways in learning new information.

We learned how to find the podcasts for stone money and how to watch it for our paper. We learned we need a reference sentence and how to correctly write and grammar it.

Must contain a reference sheet at the end of your paper.

      Let’s be clear about this:

B-i partisan is a political party that is from two partys together as one. There can’t be bi-partisan legislators because there is no group of bi-partisan legislatures.

—Bi-partisan is a way to describe a committee, a group, or a piece of legislation that gets membership or contributions from two parties.
—There can’t be bi-partisan legislators because no legislator can be a member of both parties.
—But there CAN BE bi-partisan legislatures, and there almost always are: those legislatures contain members of both parties.

      Let’s be clear about this:

By adding words to separate your articles apart you are able to look up on google scholar many ways in learning new information.

—”adding words to separate your articles apart” makes no sense.
—You might mean: Adding additional search terms to your primary search parameters will narrow the results, making it more likely that the found sources will be relevant to your needs.
