  4. -We were intended to do the stone money assignment though most of the class didn’t. The basis of this assignment is the persuasiveness of pure thought. That the ability of a people to accept a rock in this case to be currency, like bitcoin and other digital currencies. Though the Yap coin is extremely expensive. This system reveals that there has been no real substantial change in the system of economy or ownership. The essay for this particular assignment is due on Friday.
-Possession is a legal construct is the few scraps of documentation that connect someone to property.
-We then completed a riddle about the nature of a hypothesis. Where we had to figure out whether it’s better to flip over all the cards to complete our hypothesis or some of them. The riddle relates to turning over cards where every card that has a vowel has an even number on the other side.
    – The professor also went over an example of our hypotheses. The professor also recommends making a conference with him to discuss your hypothesis.
-On wednesday we will go to google scholar to do our research.

      —Factually true
      —But pointless

Imagine someone asked you about your date, and you said:

He showed up on time and stayed through all planned activities. He met my expectations, and I think I met his as well.

It’s all true, but it doesn’t say how the date went.

-Money example. Currency is only as valuable as we believe it is. Most money is never seen nowadays, the opposite of what is used in the Stone Money example.
-Riddle, The hypothesis states “every card that has a vowel on one side has an even number on its opposite side. However our brain wants us to think that consonants have odd numbers on the opposite side but this is not true, a consonant and even number is possible without proving the hypothesis false.

Inflation was 80% monthly in Brazil at one point. 4 economists helped curb this by creating ‘fake money’ in the form of URV’s.

When a prize freeze occurs, businesses are more likely to revoke what they’re selling on the market (unless it’s perishable items).

The FED makes more money available and changes the price of money (through interest rates).

If your house is valued at a half million dollars today, then tomorrow it’s worth $200,000 less. You never lost your money because you never had it in the first place. These price changes are simply subject to what the market said they were valued at that given moment.

Riddle: E and 3 (red and blue) are the cards you want to flip over. This riddle shows us how easy it is to get us confused over things we are trying to prove. Things do NOT have to be symmetrical.

You don’t want to write about open ended terms that are too broad (that’s a fox hunt). This is because these terms/subjects don’t have to be researched, you’re just going to summarize sources that agree with you.

You want to forge a trail, not just set forth in a straight line along a path. Get uncomfortable.

    Omit needless words
Harder and more valuable to write a concise paper that says more or as much than a paper that has more words
Intuitive means you have a feeling something is true because it’s obvious, counter intuitive means the truth is opposite of what you intuitively thought to be true.
Currency has value because everyone agrees it does
Possession does not require being near to something, it requires authority over the object

    – Omit needless words – Strunk and white

    – Hunter Thompson said “Not a wasted word ever.” He broke his own rule and made it a bad example and made it of economy. It is easy to fix a thought, just strike it out.

    – If he truly thinks we do, the professor will strike words out of our drafts (out of love). We should take it in the spirit that it is truly done. Which is to stop wasting words.

    – Our research paper will be a 10-page paper, but little things will be added to it throughout the class. We will combine everything and take a closer look to make a 3000-word essay. Bring it down to the best 3000 words. It is easy to write 10,000 words it is hard to write 3000 words and say the same amount or the same value.

    – Counterintuitive is the last possible outcome you think there will be.

    – When you know the penalty, you have to decide if you can afford it or not.

    – The type of currency that is valuable that you can’t carry in your pocket
The universal acceptance of currency is the value of it.

    – Everything in our economy works a certain way and we don’t have any physical presence of anything. All we have are papers that have some records of what we have. Somewhere some information changes and things change.

    – Possession is a legal construct that is available to the people who need it at the moment.

    – The Yap felt impoverished when the Germans came and painted black crosses on the coins. The Germans came and basically “froze their accounts” in a sense.

    – Our Stone Money arguments are due this Sunday.

    – The riddle that we did in class involved cards with letters and numbers.
Our brain wants symmetry in the riddle. However, the hypothesis didn’t mention anything about consonants having odd numbers on the other side. It didn’t violate the hypothesis. It doesn’t matter what is on the other side of an even-numbered card. We only care about the cards that have vowels on the other side. None of the violations of the hypothesis. We care about the red and blue cards.
The riddle shows how easy it is to get confused about what there is to prove.

    – We don’t want a fox hunt hypothesis because you can easily google the answer and find ready-made papers

    – We need to schedule a conference for our hypothesis to talk and discuss with Mister Hodges.

-”Omit needless words” by Strunk and white was written on the board. Then there was another quote following that by Hunter Thompson stating, “Not a wasted word ever” alongside other words crossed out. What this was implying with the crossed out words was how to only include words that we absolutely need and to not add “fluff” into our writing.
-We learned the meaning of “counterintuitive”. It is basically the opposite of intuition and how it is the opposite of what we think things should be.
-Then we went over the essays coming up. We have a 1000 word essay due next week and then throughout the semester we are leading up to the 3000 word essay. The professor stated how 3000 words is hard to do, and how 10,000 words is easy. 3,000 words does not say as much as the 10,000 word essay. We need to keep word counts in mind since they are critical, and that makes us give our writing meaning and not waste words.
-Then we did the stone money quiz together as a class since half of us did not listen to the podcast or do the reading. We went over how Germans painted black crosses on Germans fei, how the Brazilian government had an inflation crisis, and how the federal reserve bank comes into effect with the economy.
-Riddle: Card Hypothesis. This riddle was four cards and the hypothesis here stated how the cards with vowels with even numbers on the back of them. But the hypothesis did not go over with the cards with consonants. We learned how the Hypothesis does not go backwards. We did not know what the cards had on the back of them. So we need to check and see what is on the other side of cards E and 3 have because we do not know due to what the hypothesis says.
-Went over some classmates’ hypotheses and how we all need to schedule a zoom conference to go over our hypothesis and get them as strong as possible.

-Quote:Hunter Thompson said “Not a wasted word ever.” Hunter make a mistake and wrote more but struck it out and made the saying more convenient. Strunks and White made it even shorter. Strunks and White said “Omit needless words.” When less is written the writing can be better. The focus now goes on those shorter amount of words. Trying to figure out how to dwindle the words down to say as much or more as the piece that is bigger. It is harder to write 3,000 words than 10,000 words. Getting 3,000 words worth of meaning is the skill sought after.
-Stone money:Currency is only as valuable as the holder believes. Holders of currency would not accept currency as a payment if they did not know other people would take it. People do no accept bitcoin as a payment. It is not as valuable to them as cash. Other people won’t take bitcoin so it is not worth it to take the payment.
-Riddle: It is easier to prove a hypothesis false. All it takes is one example to prove it false. To prove a hypothesis true it has to go through a lot more tests. It takes lots of examples to prove a hypothesis true. It is much harder to prove a hypothesis to be true. When looking at a hypothesis there is only one thing to care about. Whatever topic or subject the hypothesis is about is all that is looked for. If the hypothesis is made that every card that has a vowel on it also has a even number on the back of the card the only thing that matters is cards with a vowel on the front. Those are the only cards to be looked at, the other types of cards do not matter unless it is said in the hypothesis.

      This is true:

If the hypothesis is made that every card that has a vowel on one side has a even number on the other side, the only cards we need to turn over are the VOWEL cards (to be sure they’re paired with even numbers) and the ODD cards (to be sure they AREN’T paired with vowels). CONSONANT cards and EVEN cards are irrelevant.

“Omit needless words” – Strunk and White

Thompson said “Not a wasted word. ever “ even though he wasted 13 words in between

The point is to figure out how to write words that actually say what is meant to be said or more, rather than writing more and saying less.

Stone money is a currency that you cannot carry in your pocket

Almost everything now is not real currency or real ownership of it (ex: homes, land, or a car) it is more of someone occupying it but they do not possess it.

Question 2: Limestone diss has a lot of value and the trip it has to take makes it so valuable. When it is in front of your house it makes you seem wealthy because you paid for it and paid for it to get to you.

Question 3: The Yap felt impoverished when the Germans came because they started changing their society. (demanded roads even though they did not need them). the Germans also started writing “X” on the homeowners to make them think they were not poor.

Question 4: No change of location is required

Question 5: 3 economists helped curb the inflation by creating ‘fake money’

    Question 6: nobody saves anything

Question 7: They started taking away goods from the market and selling them to people privately who would pay more money

Question 8: interest rates, make more money available, and change the price of money

    Question 9: interest rates

Question 10: the money was never really there in the first place.

The riddle showed that a question is worded one way does not mean it can be rewarded in different ways. Do not confuse the question, even though there could be other facts it does not mean you are wrong.

Counterintuitive is the last possible outcome you can think of.

When you know the penalty, you make your own decision of wether or not it is worth it

  14. – Strunk & white quote: “Omit needless words”. For students future benefit, the professor will strike out needless words and points that don’t relate to the work. This helps stay on focus for the chosen topic and avoid weaning off the main point.
    – Nature of the course: Will work on figuring out how to get to 3,000 words. It’s easy to write 10,000 words but troubling to write 3,000 because the writer has to make the text more valuable (Has more meaning in a shorter text).

    – Stone money is counterintuitive: what type of currency can’t someone carry in their pocket? Currency depends on the value it’s believed to have. If someone believes it has the power to purchase what is desired, why not try. Universal acceptability and understanding of currency is important but we don’t see it anymore. In yap the money is very visible, limestone disks with a hole in it, It’s said to be enough for dowry, bringing family members home, pretty much anything. Modernly, we still have ways to show how much or what someone owns. An example being a piece of paper stating something.

-Stone money first 1,000 words is due on sunday, also reading an article, this provides an idea to the professor on how students write.
    – Card hypothesis riddle: hypothesis, each card with a vowel has an even number on the other side.
    – Point of this was to critically read and stick with the original hypothesis, it’s easy to get confused on what we’re trying to prove. We need to be careful with what we choose to use to support our claims.
    – It’s easy to find easy answers to topics from a simple search, there’s comfort in choosing a broad topic , value of that is very small.

    – A conference call is highly recommended to defend and develop your hypothesis, schedule a meeting with the professor with link provided.
    – There will be old material to go over next class and it will be introduced on wednesday. Google scholar will be mentioned, weeds out millions of commercial focused works, helps explore the hypothesis and use valuable sources to create your hypothesis.

    – Be careful with the media you take in because you become what you consume.
    – House of Commons: It was mentioned the parties face each other so it makes the difference on how they argue with the other person. The relation of this to the lecture is that it forces the writer to really articulate how they structure their argument.

The Yap’s ended up bulding roads. Money was never there in the first place. Many times the coin was not moved when ownership was transferred, there was only the construct of ownership change. This concept is still the same in today’s world, ownership of valuable goods is only a legal construct determined by a piece of paper.

-Quote from Hunter S. Thompson about not wasting words with words the professor believed to be wasted struck out. This was used as an example of what might happen to our work if we use to many words the professor believes to be unnecessary

-The riddle of the day asked us to determine which cards we would have to turn over in order to test the presented hypothesis. I answered with all four cards because I assumed that cards with Consonants on one side would need to have an odd number on the other side, when in reality the Hypothesis was only about cards with vowels and said nothing of consonants. This riddle was presented as a way to get us to critically analyze a hypothesis, something which we will have to do for our own hypothesis.

    – Riddle: what card do you need to turn over to prove the hypothesis?; our brain wants to see symmetry; all cards could have two on the back and it wouldnt violate the hypothesis; it does not matter what is on the other side of an even number card, we only care what is on the side of a vowel card.
    – Don’t send yourself on a fox hunt for the hypothesis, no open ended terms that are very broad and easy to manipulate.
    -Schedule conference by the 6th
-Stone money is due this Sunday

    Class Riddle-
    EG23
Fact- Each card has a number on one side and a letter on the other
Hypothesis- every card that has a vowel on one side has an even number on the opposite side
Question- which card or cards must you turn over in order to test the hypothesis?

We came to the conclusion that it was easier to prove it false because we only have to find one flaw but to prove it true we would to see every card

The hypothesis never stated the non vowel cards have odd numbers behind it, the hypothesis just claims that the vowel cards have even numbers on it

Red and blue are the only cards we would have to flip over

Stone money is due on Sunday

    Class Notes:

After posting your hypothesis post Professor Hodges would like to set up a meeting to discuss your hypothesis and what you created. You will get beneficial feedback from this conference that will help you later on down the road with many other assignments. Also review the rules for class notes.

    – We will also be writing a Research persuasive argument which is also called a research paper or essay. It would also be 3,000 words written. Make sure to look and write and create and brainstorm as many ideas as possible.

    – Stone money arguments are also due Sunday. Make sure that arguments look up to part while comparing to what is needed that was discussed in class

    – Create a checklist for yourself to help guide yourself across the entire topic and assignment.

Riddle: the riddle of the day was there were four cards each a different color and with vowels and also numbers. We discussed the hypothesis before trying to work out the riddle. Though as using the hypothesis to answer the riddle it did not conclude the the cards with the consonants. We also learned that the hypothesis does not go in reverse. So in order to solve the riddle we needed to go and discover what was on the other sides of the other cards before trying to figure out what was going on with the riddle and how to solve it. So with that being said we had to flip over the cards E and 3 on them because 9of what the hypothesis doesn’t cover while trying to solve the riddle.
