Reflective – Ilovemydog

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I believe that this core value can be seen throughout the majority of my writing. However, I feel that it can be seen in my research paper for this course. A lot of my posts were posted under the feedback please category and I did utilize that option a lot. I relied on the feedback given to me to further my writing. My research paper included everything that I had written so far and most of the feedback that was given to me was looked at and fixed. Interacting with Professor Hodges throughout the course allowed me as a writer to reflect on and fix what I wrote and I am grateful for that. I felt as if through the feedback given for my research paper I was able to experience my writing from a different perspective which also helped me through the process of revising my work.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

This core value can be demonstrated through my causal rewrite. A lot of my writing included evidence from articles, but this one really stands out as the evidence flows from one part of the essay to the next. Especially, in the middle sections when I spoke about Sinéad O’Connor and Ed Sheeran. I used evidence throughout the middle sections to prove the points I wanted to make in this essay. For example, the evidence was used to support the effects of the music industry in modern times. While both may be completely different articles talking about different occasions, they supported what I wanted to say. I managed to synthesize the ideas that people had from these communities online and attribute them to my own writing.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

A lot of what is said for this core value was experienced with the visual rhetoric assignment. I analyzed the video I chose to find the purpose of the video itself as well as study the different approaches to help the viewer understand the meaning. I was shown certain scenes and from there I was to interpret what was happening in the video. The surroundings helped me figure out what was going on as well. If I was just watching this video to watch it and not for an assignment, I probably wouldn’t have put as much thought into it. For example, in the beginning of the video, I talked about the house and the decorations surrounding it. The assignment aspect made me focus more on the video and what visuals could really mean.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Core value 4 was seen in my definition/definition rewrite argument. While I may not have used as many sources for this argument I did the most research for it. I utilized online PDF texts that I wouldn’t have ever looked for if I hadn’t been encouraged by Professor Hodges to look for outside materials on our school’s database. Having the different sources between the books and articles I used for this argument, I don’t think I would have been able to support the ideas and conclusions I was making. For example, I was talking about how music from the 60s and 70s had more meaning and influence than the music now, and I used the PDF text version of, Pete Seeger, Musical Revolutionary, to support my thought. The evidence I pulled was one of Seeger’s songs about the Vietnam War. I was able to gain more of an understanding from researching these outside sources.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I demonstrated this core value in my rebuttal rewrite argument. I had a lot of quotes in this argument and I presented my ethical responsibility pretty well considering that I did my citations correctly. I gave credit where credit was due and my references were written correctly as well. I also did everything according to the APA format that we are using for this course. I also believe that I did my best to create a fair and respectful argument. For example, I am arguing that activism in music is performative today rather than how it used to be in the 60s and 70s. I kept my peace throughout my writing but fought for my idea. However, I still presented the other side clearly and thoughtfully.

ILoveMyDog, you’ve made some good observations about your own work here that your classmates have for the most part missed. In particular, I can actually tell what you wrote about! You might be surprised to hear that in doing so you achieved a level of specificity and persuasiveness way above average.
