0:00-0:01- During the first second of the video, before any action actually begins, I can see a stuffed ferret on a branch next to a lamp. The wood panels on the house tell me it may be an older model and from all of the decorations that can be seen here, the house seems very broken in and lived in. The question that arises from this is now why did the filmmakers choose this set specifically? The filmmakers may have wanted to create a certain ambiance for the viewer. The decorations making the house look broken in may be deliberate. The filmmakers could be trying to create the effect of comfort and warmth during this part of the video for the audience. The title screen card for the channel pops up as well. It says “The Awkward Silence Presents” which just seems to be a friendly introduction to the rest of the video.
0:02-0:04- The camera cuts and shows us a new part of the house and we are introduced to the first official character of the video. This area of the house also has a lamp. A fish tank, a picture on the wall, books, a record player, and some glass antiques. Everything is still looking older in this house. Almost like a mid to late 70 style. The first character of this video is a young man who seems to be in his 20s. Why does the camera cut to this young man? Maybe he is trying to tell the audience something or he has a point to make. The way that he is sitting in the chair makes it seem like he is trying to tell a story. In this section of the video, a new screen card pops up that says “How to know if you should reach out to a friend.” From this screen card it is easy to recognize that this is what the video will be about. However, from all of this it is important to understand the whsimical and ironic tone that is being conveyed to the reader. This young man sitting in his chair in a narrative-like stance almost suggests a playful feel for the viewer. From the vibe we get so far, it is almost like this guy filmed this video in his grandpas basement. Which again suggests a sense of playfulness.
0:05- In this section of the video, the camera cuts close to the young man’s face. The camera may do this because the video may introduce something new to the audience so it is used as a sort of transition.
0:06-0:14- This part of the video transitions from the young man to several other characters. The camera is very close to their faces and it is a variety of people. Young men and women are speaking to the camera. They all speak to the camera for a very short amount of time as the camera continues to cut every second. The backgrounds are all very different. Some backgrounds have a lot of color and some really little color. Everyone is in a different setting. At the very beginning of the 14th second of the video, it cuts back to the young man sitting in a chair.
0:14-0:16- The camera is on the young man again and he is still sitting in the same position as he was. He is using a lot of hand motions. He might be using these hand motions to portray to the audience that he is trying to help them in a way.
0:17-0:21- The camera is still on the young man, but this time it is zoomed in even closer. The young man is still speaking and using hand motions.
0:22-0:26- At this point in the video, there is text that pops up on the screen again. This time it says “Find out how you can help a friend with their mental health at SiezeTheAwkward.org.” this writing is all in yellow which makes it stand out even more. There are also some icons underneath it as well. This text implies that this is what the video was about the entire time. Which is how to help your friends with their mental health if they are having issues with it. The background is a blurred-out closer shot of the fish tank and records that were seen previously in the video.
0:26-0:31- The end of the video is a link to another video that talks about mental health and friendship as well as a link to the website that was mentioned. The background is still the blurred-out fishtank and records.
This particular video is a bit hard to follow without sound. However, with sound, it is easy to see that the video contains elements of logos and pathos. When I went back and listened to the sound, there were reasons given to the audience to compare and contrast how friends could be acting in a way that could be considered weird. These are logical explanations. The whole video however relates to the elements of pathos. It draws in the feelings of the audience due to the topic of the video which is our friends and the people we hold closest to us. It is hard to imagine the people we love being upset so the video pulls us in.
ILoveMyDog, you haven’t told me how much or how little time to spend on your Feedback, so I’ll just wing it, and you’ll owe me the same amount of time on revisions as I spend on Feedback.
I may not proceed all the way to the end of the assignment.
—I’m familiar with this video, and others in the same series, because it’s been a popular choice with students over past semesters. I’ll try to avoid watching it for awhile (maybe all the way through this feedback) so that I can concentrate on how well and fully you “paint the picture” for me.
Either that, or we’re being deliberately manipulated to draw false first impressions so the ad can SURPRISE us with a socially-conscious insight such as: “See? The greatest wisdom can come from the mouth of a kid in a moldy rumpus room.”
Maybe the filmmakers adopted a style they thought would seem less preachy or patronizing than advice from an obvious “professional.”
See if that helps you share more of the details of what you’re seeing.
I’ll provisionally Grade this post on Canvas when you’ve completed at least 30 minutes of revisions.
