Bibliography (Proposal +5)- Hockeyfan

Source 1:  https://www.hindawi.com/journals/tsmed/2022/7024766/

This source explains how in the NHL you are fined for the penalties you get while fighting. It goes into the investigator rule, in which if you start the fight you receive a higher fine.

I plan to use this as a possible remedy for on ice penalties, such as slamming someone into the boards during the game.  As a result this might deter players from making sneaky plays.

Source 2:  https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?collection=journals&handle=hein.journals/jlas11&id=218&men_tab=srchresults

This source is a law journal it explains how the court system should be more involved in creating regulations to prevent violence. It also explains how if the court was involved more it would be a better way of providing more consistent measures when violence occurs.

I plan to use this to explain how unregulated the sport is, and if we sat down and looked at what can be changed and who can help us change it such as the court it would still be enjoyable and safer.

This source is another law journal, it explains how a player on the avalanche was struck in the neck and his face was pounded into the ice. He was faced with 3 fractured vertebrate and a concussion as a result.

I plan to use this to explain how injuries such as this can cause a player to forgo a whole season, as well as their ability to play further. Without regulation and the refs stopping the fight from getting to a point such as this it caused this player to have a serious spinal injury.

Source 4:  https://journals.lww.com/cjsportsmed/fulltext/2001/10000/eliminate_head_checking_in_ice_hockey.1.aspx?casa_token=1t0OVlSATkQAAAAA:UYBBDx_vfwh_SYSLYb56thmMvNP0c8O_8LjnXwooMEg0Q8Ke9g9BDvaDi5ca1RwYAt-dPMp6DGIJRknueR7VxBuCdw

This source provides statistics on how frequent head injuries occurs in the NHL. It then explains how body checking and stick checking lead to injuries during games.

I plan to use this source to show how often injuries occur when playing hockey and how the lack of gear around the neck may also have a factor in how often these head injuries occur.

Source 5: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/192230

This source explains how you are more prone to injury in the NHL when you only wear a half face sheild. It explains the statistics of wearing a face shield vs wearing a half face shield and how drastic the difference in injury is between the two.

I plan on using this source to explain the pros of wearing a full face shield when playing in the NHL and the benefits it has for not only the longevity of the players career, but also the safety that comes with it.

This could so easily have gone wrong, HockeyFan, but I’m glad to see you’re not relying on five sports blogs for your research. I would not have predicted that you’d find more than one academic journal articles on the subject of the Canadian legal code and hockey. Good find. I like the seriousness of your approach.

You can’t score the best grade without including a Proposal section at the top of the post. See your classmates’ posts for reference if needed.

Provisionally graded. Grades on this assignment are subject to change all the way to the portfolio, when it will become the “Annotated Bibliography.”.
