My Notes – kidhanekoma

WED JAN 28

I do not like this new posting system/theme WordPress uses. But seeing as how I don’t know how to switch back to classic mode yet, I pretty much of to deal with it for now.

Remember to leave My Notes open during class. It indicates whether you are in class or not.

How to create a link within your post.

Highlight a word, then click insert link

Class is about revising your work. As much as you can. Remove yourself from your first draft as quickly as possible. Even if you’re first draft is already good. It helps you to create something better than that.

Assignment Deadlines

– Just do the work on time. It’s that easy. Don’t make it hard for no reason.

– Deadlines are fair. There are no excuses.

MON FEB 2

Today Professor Hodges opened by having one of his past students tell us about the writing lab and tutoring.

He later discussed the grading “code” system. As well as revising portfolio assignments, and requesting grades and feedback.

The mechanics tab is a helpful tool that teaches how to insert links, properly cite material, and edit posts.

The writing tab is a quick in depth “how to” when writing in the class. Useful tips and do’s and don’ts of writing.

– Identify and remove throat clearing

– Do not openly state opinion

– Provide background information when it is needed

– Do not speak in the second person

– Summarize work while still keeping important bits of information.

MON FEB 9

Take credit for all of your posts. To do this, enter your username into categories. Makes finding your previous posts much easier.

Professor David opened class today with conference schedule options. Must have at least three conferences. One before Spring Break, one after Spring Break, one for the end of the semester.

Began discussion about memories. The more we access a memory the stronger it becomes. More information soon forms.

Grammar Lesson

– Proper use of “their, they’re, there” and “it’s, its”.

– Remove gender pronouns as often as you can. Use “they, them, their”. Their is legal with a plural subject. “All writers want their work to be read”. Illegal with a singular subject

WED FEB 11

Remember something by not doing something. You may not remember key details, but you will definitely remember choosing not to do something.

“Top Down” chronology. Put the date at the top of your new notes for the day.

Makes it easier to organize and find notes.

Example of a proper visual rhetoric.

– Works better watching the video a few times with the volume off.

– There are signs in everything. Body language, background images, etc

White Paper discussion: Polio

Strengthen your thesis by researching topics that counter your topic/perspective. It will make you find new ways to counter them and learn more information on your own topic.

MON FEB 16

Chinese Censorship of the Internet

– China seems to be so proud of the censorship they created their anthem for it. The Mind and Spirit of Cyberspace Security. It actually has a fairly catchy melody, despite being fairly messed up.

Propublica

Remain as opinionated as possible.

Harvesting organs of Death Row inmates.

Death by removing organs.

A more humane death penalty? A painless alternative to lethal injection, hanging, and/or electrocution. Generates organs to those who need them.

MON FEB 23

Professor opened with a discussion about cheese. Cheese is pretty wonderful.

Body “yips”. When your body has a something like a jitter and it ruins your momentum.

Feedback/Grading

– Request feedback on assignments. When you receive feedback, reply and ask where you can make corrections, or argue. Everybody loves a nice argument. It’s something most people can learn from.

– Ask for grading on your assignment

White Paper discussion

– Come up with a practical hypothesis for your research topic.

– Develop a strong thesis statement. One that is both grabbing and factual

WED FEB 25

The definition of rape throughout the years. Sexist and treated women as if they did not matter.

Definition essay

– Wi-Fi

– Is using a neighbor’s unlocked internet connection without them knowing actually stealing?

– Is it possible to share an internet connection? Akin to asking a neighbor for sugar.

Definition is argument.

Citing Work

MON MAR 2

Pizza was ordered in class. It was radical

The assignment chart is a useful tool to figure out what assignments need to be completed, need feedback, or need replies.

Different types of claims

But first, pizza party.

Causal claim

Factual claim

Category claim

Quality claim

WED MAR 4

I believe the show professor is referring to is Gotham?

Discussion on claims and the Bosch v. Wec lawsuit

MON MAR 9

Professor For Life – If you want a paper torn apart (but in a constructive way!) Just shoot Professor Hodges a text or e-mail about your paper. Regardless of subject.

How to Open

Techniques to strengthen and grab readers to your introduction.

WED MAR 11

Proper understanding of subjects and verbs to add more “meat” to your arguments.

MON MAR 23

A “science experiment” in a Comp II class?

I think that the reason why the filter was able to capture air is because even though it has space to pour water out, it is also enclosed enough to keep pressure in.

MON MAR 30

Always look at the bigger picture, and think outside of the box. Take what you are being presented at face value, and logically respond to it from both sides.

It is true or false, reasonable or unreasonable, right or wrong.

Logic and ethics.

WED APR 1

Causal Arguments

We often make causal statements whether we notice it or not. It is a normal part of human communication as well as writing.

Immediate Cause

Remote Cause

Precipitating Cause

Contributing Cause

MON APR 6

Every written document can be an argument.

WED APR 8

MON APR 13

What’s Going On is an excellent song. Marvin Gaye is an excellent musician.

As is Sam Cooke.

Assertion and Denial

Assert is more or less a forceful claim

Denial is used to refute a claim but focusing on the technicalities of a subject.

WED APR 15

MON APR 20

Cite sources that are used within your paper. Articles read do not count.

Deadlines are fair except when they’re not, kidhanekoma. Please reserve your right to object when you’re misused. I believe what I ask you to do is right, but I prefer that you feel free to question, and I hope that you’ll do so aloud, not only to yourself. If I ever make you feel wrong for disagreeing with me, then you’ll know I’m a hypocrite and that you have a problem. Until I disappoint you though, give me a chance to react correctly to your objections.

By the way, that’s a good link on Highlight a word.

Actually, the more we access memories, the more unreliable they become, since accessing them re-integrates them with our entire experience, changing them a bit each time.
