WED MAR 25th

  • win a rebuttal by offering evidence which proves the other person wrong along with their evidence
  • type in scholar before google for advanced searching
  • research to form a thesis, not to prove a thesis
  • ‘positive reinforcement’ is actually negative
  • rebuttal argument-research something that proves your hypothesis wrong

MON MAR 23rd

  • the air is not escaping the coffee filter because more pressure must be put to make the air go through the filter
  • update the definition essay by wednseday noon
  • talking about nuclear power plants and the risk and reward of having them
  • win a rebuttal by offering evidence which proves the other person wrongs along with their evidence

  • examine grading posts provided by instruct, compare to own writing
  • professor generously brought coffee to a select few in the class
  • going over different topics
  • search through different topics to see what interests me

remember to open ‘my notes’ every day of class as it is used for attendance purposes.

  • limestone disks shaped into wheels were coins called ‘Fe”
  • better the quality of the coin the more it was worth
  • coin represented a sufficient amount of work which made the coin worth something
  • germans came to yap and forced change
  • Fe represents gold in our society
  • money is seemingly based off of nothing
  • markets decide an objects worth
  • Brazil printed more money which in turn killed their economy
  • unit of real value (URV) was created to help fix this problem
  • 1 unit of real value= a set amount of money

MON FEB 2

  • talk to professor before or after class to find out grading
  • don’t say you, your, your etc (second person)
  • get rid of pronouns in your writing
  • throat clearing in writing is over preparing
  • most important job of first sentence is to keep readers reading the next sentence and so on
  • keep your writing focused on your reader that way they keep interested
  • summarize only the part of the article that serves your purpose
  • point of researching is to discover what in fact is true
  • read to try to learn then use portions of article we have found to support conclusion that is being made
  • browse ‘counterintuitive topics’ and shortly one will be selected to focus on for 10-12 weeks of the semester IMPORTANT 
  • fill up your stories with ‘COWS’
  • use ‘CHIPS’ to keep readers happy

    That about covers it, brett. I wonder if, looking back, you’ll wonder why you recorded the details of the narrative instead of what the facts meant to you at the time. Of course you’ll use whatever note-taking style suits you best. For my money, the two things I said tonight worth remembering were: “The Yap’s concept of money is no more abstract than ours,” and “Your first draft is shredder fodder you should get rid of as soon as possible.” 🙂

    Introduction paragraphs don’t necessarily have 4 parts. My first model had four sentences, so I challenged myself to produce 3 more that each had 4 sentences. That’s all. Your introduction should be exactly as long or short as it needs to be to address a central premise you can’t wait to share with readers.
