In his highly imaginative novel, The Tin Drum, Günter Grass includes a chapter on the therapeutic value of crying. “The Onion Cellar” is both the title of the chapter and the name of the ridiculously unlikely night club that serves no drinks, serves no food, makes its patrons only mildly comfortable on packing-crate seats, but which provides them the opportunity to have a good cry in a welcoming and somewhat public space.
Here are four pages from the chapter.
