MY RESEARCH PROPOSAL:

For my research essay I will be comparing the amount of help that homeless receive, in regards to whether or not they have a dog with them. A study completed by NYU in 2019 found that only 5-10 percent of homeless on the streets of New York City own dogs. Dogs can serve many purposes to the homeless by providing a source of companionship, and something that can grab peoples attention as they are walking by. The people of society each have their own opinions on giving back to the homeless. There are many factors of why people do and do not give back to the homeless which can include comfor levels, and safety levels. For the homeless, dogs can help them with creating a more comfortable environment, making people more drawn to giving a donation. As a society, it is important to be sympathetic and understanding to those who are less fortunate, and by the homeless having dogs with them, it may be the answer for getting them more help.

Dogs are what get people through their toughest times, and will constantly provide unconditional love. Those are extremely important factors for why more homeless could use dogs, alongside the advantage of getting more help. The people of society are more likely to give a donation to a homeless person with a dog versus without one. They provide a sense of security and comfort to those around them, and can be the solution for having more people give back to the less fortunate.

Sources:

1)Kahl, N. Smith, M. (2016, December 1). Confrontations and Donations: Encounters between Homeless Pet Owners and the Public. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1533-8525.2011.01224.x

Background: This article goes over how having a dog alongside a homeless person can increase the chances of getting a donation. It was explained how the dog is creating a more light hearted atmosphere, and makes people more drawn to giving back. Also, it was emphasized how the homeless can make it clear how their animal comes first, and how the funding they receive will go to their dog first.

Why I did not use it: I did not use this article because of the length of it and the lack of information. The information in this article was stuff that I had already found in other sources, but with a bunch more information compared to this article. While this article did have good points about how the homeless put their dog first in many aspects, I already had used other articles that touched on that topic that I liked better.

2)Irvine, L. (n.d.). Animals as Lifechangers and lifesavers: Pets in the redemption narratives of homeless people – Leslie Irvine, 2013. Animals as Lifechangers and Lifesavers: Pets in the Redemption Narratives of Homeless People. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0891241612456550

Background: This source is giving insight into many stories of homeless with dogs, and how that has affected them. This source goes over how the breed of dog can affect whether or not people feel comfortable enough to approach the homeless in order to give the donation. It also touches on how dogs get the homeless through their toughest days, and provide a sense of hope for them.

Why I did not use it: This source had a mass amount of information, but it was all over the place. It touched on many topics, and personal stories, and not one thing about dogs and their owners so it was hard for me to focus in and find what I was looking for in this lengthy article. I wish I had used this article in the section named “Methods” because it discusses information on shelters and how most times the shelters don’t work with the homeless with dogs. This would have been a good point to add to my argument.

3)Bristol, U. of. (2023, July 25). Dogs provide critical support for homeless people, study finds. Newswise. https://www.newswise.com/articles/dogs-provide-critical-support-for-homeless-people-study-finds

Background: This article discusses how dogs can improve mental health amongst the homeless. It gave insight on how dogs can give the homeless something to live for, and can give them a sense of security. This article also discusses how the Bristol Veterinary School conducted a study to prove how dogs improve the homeless mental health, and how these dogs also create a sense of responsibility. This study showed how the dogs are the homeless first priority, and the dogs needs are met before their own. Some homeless will not even go into a shelter if they do not let the dog join, and that goes to show how they put their dogs before themselves.

Why I did not use it: This article was not very informative, and touched on things that the average person would know already about dogs, and common sense about them being out on the street. This article touched on the dogs’ living situations and how they could struggle outside with a lack of resources. I had also already found another source discussing this and felt that it was better so I used a different source instead.

4)Blouin, D. (n.d.). Are Dogs Children, companions, or just animals? understanding variations in people’s orientations toward animals. Are Dogs Children, Companions, or Just Animals? Understanding Variations in People’s Orientations toward Animals. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/272271895_Are_Dogs_Children_Companions_or_Just_Animals_Understanding_Variations_in_People’s_Orientations_toward_Animals

Background: This article touches on why humans can be drawn to dogs, and the different types of orientations people have towards dogs. The three orientations include dominionistic, humanistic, and protectionism. This article makes it clear that people who are more protectionist will be more drawn to dogs, leading to hopefully them providing a donation.

How I used it: This source is incredibly informative and I used that to my advantage by providing the reader a term such as protectionistic, and explaining the relationship between the homeless and their dog, but with a more elevated wording. I was explaining how a protectionistic relationship means that the homeless in this case and their dog are extremely close and have loads of respect for each other. It was important to explain this term so that the reader can really see the closeness of the relationship between the dog and its owner.

5)Walsh, A. (2015, April 28). Homeless Women’s Voices on Incorporating Companion Animals into Shelter Services. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.2752/175303711X12923300467447

Background: This article focuses on women that are homeless, but in shelters. It touches on how the more vulnerable the woman is, the more likely that they are going to have a dog. This article expresses how there needs to be a change in the system in shelters regarding the acceptance of dogs or not, and making sure that the people and dogs are healthy.

Why I did not use it: I did not use this source because I did not want to gender stereotype a homeless person. This article focuses on women and not men. I didn’t just want to discuss women’s struggles, because men can have the same struggles being homeless.

6)ASPCA. (n.d.). People with pets experiencing homelessness. https://www.aspca.org/improving-laws-animals/public-policy/housing/people-pets-experiencing-homelessness#:~:text=Studies%20have%20shown%20that%20people,social%20support%2C%20companionship%20and%20security.

Background: This article focuses on statistics on homelessness, and how it is a rising complex problem that society is facing. It also talks about possible reasons why people become homeless, and how there is a lack of resources and shelters for the homeless. Especially a lack of shelters that are going to accept the homeless and their dogs. Then this article gets into how dogs positively affect homeless people, and how the dogs give the homeless a sense of responsibility and are a stable source of support amongst all of their challenges.

How I used it: I used this source for explaining how dogs positively affect the homeless and how the dogs can keep the homeless alive. I explained how the dogs give the homeless something to live for, and can show the outside world how they are responsible enough to take care of themselves, and then two take care of a dog with their challenging circumstances.

7)Padmabandu, M. (2023, June 5). The science behind why we love our dogs. Embarkvet. https://embarkvet.com/resources/science-behind-why-we-love-our-dogs/#:~:text=Dogs%20give%20us%20so%20much,pets%20tend%20to%20live%20longer.

Background: This article starts out explaining the bonds behind humans and their dogs. This article talks about imprinting and how important it is in the early stage of an animal’s life. Then it discusses the “love hormone” that dogs can bring humans, and how dogs can provide many mental benefits to their owners or people in general. Overall, this article focuses on why we can be attracted to dogs and the love that we bring them and for the love that they bring humans.

How I used it: I used this article for discussing the health benefits that dogs can bring humans, especially to the homeless. I focused more so on the mental benefits that they bring. The homeless already must be extremely stressed since they are fighting for their lives out on the streets, so I talked about how important it is for a homeless person to have a dog and how the dogs can help them mentally which can then make them happier and have better physical health as well.

8)Freking, K. (2023, December 15). US homelessness up 12% to highest reported level as rents soar and coronavirus pandemic aid lapses. AP News. https://apnews.com/article/homelessness-increase-rent-hud-covid-60bd88687e1aef1b02d25425798bd3b1

Background: This article discusses the increase of homeless people over the years, and how the increase of prices has pushed many people out on the streets. Then it talks about the main states with the highest rates of homelessness which include Washington, California, Florida, and New York. Many of the main places where the homeless reside are in cities.

How I used it: I used this article to discuss how inflation has pushed people out of their homes due to them not being able to afford it due to inflation, and how their last resort was to then become homeless. The main purpose that this article gave me was to explain one of the main reasons why people have become homeless, and that is the increase of prices that the world is facing.

9)Trott, S. (2024, March 19). How to help your dog adjust to a new environment. Now Fresh. https://nowfresh.com/en-us/help-your-dog-adjust-to-a-new-environment#

Background: This article was discussing how dogs can adapt to their new environment, and how they react to change. It was saying how dogs can be overwhelmed just like people with change, and how they need time to adjust and adapt to their new surroundings. It touches on introducing dogs into cities and how people should start with taking their dogs in gradually, and then building up time to make sure that their dog is getting used to their new surroundings, and building up the tolerance of being around so many people. It says how taking the dog through its new area and introducing it to new things gradually will help the adjustment process.

How I used it: I used this article by talking about how the homeless dogs will end up adjusting to its new environment and being out on the streets. I talked about how quickly the dog will realize that this is its new place, and how the dog has to get comfortable. I discussed how people walking by should not be nervous about the dog being on-edge because most likely the dog will be adjusted to being around a lot of people, and being in the havoc of cities.

10)A&A Lawn Care & Landscaping. (2021, March 31). Tips to keep your pets and family from getting fleas and ticks in your yard…: A&A Lawn Care & Landscaping. A & A Lawn Care & Landscaping. https://aalawns.com/tips-to-keep-your-pets-and-family-from-getting-fleas-and-ticks-in-your-yard/

Background: This article discussed all about fleas and ticks and other diseases that dogs can pick up. It explained where dogs are more likely to get these diseases and how to try and prevent it. It explains how you need to keep your grass cut and if needed to hire a company to help out. This article does not talk about the homeless and dogs, it is just explaining fleas and ticks and how dogs can get them.

How I used it: I used this article to explain how dogs are more likely to get fleas and ticks in grassy areas and in trees. I explained how people should not be afraid to approach dogs that are next to a homeless person, especially in the city because it is not likely to get fleas and ticks because they would be on the streets and not near the bushes. I wanted to make it clear that the dogs could still get it but it would be less likely to get it compared to other dogs that are in a household that would be more near the bushes.

11)Admin. (2018, July 5). Pitbull abuse and neglect. Animal Justice League of America. https://www.animaljla.org/pitbull-abuse-and-neglect/

Background: This article was all about the stereotypes that come along with Pitbulls, and how they are perceived in society. It also touches on how they actually are, and how they often get abused and mistreated. It is saying how they can be aggressive but most times it is because of how the environment they were raised in. It is explaining how abuse needs to be reported and how the Animal Justice League of America is trying to take charge over abusers and stop them.

How I used it: I used this article to debunk the stereotypes with Pitbulls, and how people need to realize that not only Pitbulls are aggressive dogs. I explained how it is not fair to only put the label on Pitbulls for being aggressive and dangerous, and how any dog breed if not raised right could be that way. I explained how while people could have their drawbacks to approaching a homeless person that may have a Pitbull, it should not be the end all be all. I explained how the homeless want people to approach them and would need a friendly dog so that the donors do not get attacked.

12)Sabo, P. (2020, June 12). Pets & homelessness in la . The Vanderpump Dog Foundation. https://www.vanderpumpdogs.org/our-blog/pets-amp-homelessness-in-lanbsp

Background: The Pets and Homelessness in LA article was extremely helpful and informative on explaining the dynamics of the homeless and dogs. This source was sharing statistics on how only 5 and 10 percent of homeless have dogs out of the entire homeless population in Los Angeles which is a major city. This article was explaining how not everything is always picture perfect with having dogs out on the street. It is saying how it is a ton of work and responsibility, and let alone money that its owner most likely does not have. Then it gets into the stray animals in LA and how they are not taken care of properly even after being emitted into a shelter. It goes over lifespans of pets that are out on the streets and how they are not likely to last as long as the average dog, because of the environments that they are in.

How I used it: I did not take a lot from this source, but what I did take from it was the lifespan of dogs that are out on the streets. I thought that it was important to mention the short lifespans of the dogs out on the streets so that the reader could really see how much the dog does and sacrifices for their owner. The dogs are living shorter lives because they are not in the best conditions, perhaps are not nourished as good, and are sacrificing themselves for their owners. The lifespan of a dog outside is more than half times shorter than the average which is telling.

13)Companion animal overpopulation and homelessness. PETA. (2024, April 2). https://www.peta.org/issues/animal-companion-issues/overpopulation/

Background: This article was discussing how there are millions of homeless animals that are out there struggling every single day to live. Animal shelters are at max capacity and have to turn animals away which is making them struggle even more. It is saying how animals are struggling and cannot just be left to fend for themselves.

How I used it: I used this article to explain how dogs need love, care, food, water, and their basic necessities just like humans. It would not be fair for a homeless person that has a dog to only care for itself and not give their dog food and water. I explained how important it is that the homeless take good care of their dog, because their dog is taking care of them. If the dog is low on fuel it is not going to be able to perform as well as it can, which can make them bring in less donations.

Bibliography (Proposal +5)- Hockeyfan

Source 1:  https://www.hindawi.com/journals/tsmed/2022/7024766/

This source explains how in the NHL you are fined for the penalties you get while fighting. It goes into the investigator rule, in which if you start the fight you receive a higher fine.

I plan to use this as a possible remedy for on ice penalties, such as slamming someone into the boards during the game.  As a result this might deter players from making sneaky plays.

Source 2:  https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?collection=journals&handle=hein.journals/jlas11&id=218&men_tab=srchresults

This source is a law journal it explains how the court system should be more involved in creating regulations to prevent violence. It also explains how if the court was involved more it would be a better way of providing more consistent measures when violence occurs.

I plan to use this to explain how unregulated the sport is, and if we sat down and looked at what can be changed and who can help us change it such as the court it would still be enjoyable and safer.

Source 3: https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/manitob31&div=19&g_sent=1&casa_token=X1DQgUxas3QAAAAA:mrsbM15d2bJn-Wv1mQb0uvDnq93kFj1lO_wz45UBP98PtPkjx6K8RglHN5fVI_gahM-VBicwGbc0&collection=journals

This source is another law journal, it explains how a player on the avalanche was struck in the neck and his face was pounded into the ice. He was faced with 3 fractured vertebrate and a concussion as a result.

I plan to use this to explain how injuries such as this can cause a player to forgo a whole season, as well as their ability to play further. Without regulation and the refs stopping the fight from getting to a point such as this it caused this player to have a serious spinal injury.

Source 4:  https://journals.lww.com/cjsportsmed/fulltext/2001/10000/eliminate_head_checking_in_ice_hockey.1.aspx?casa_token=1t0OVlSATkQAAAAA:UYBBDx_vfwh_SYSLYb56thmMvNP0c8O_8LjnXwooMEg0Q8Ke9g9BDvaDi5ca1RwYAt-dPMp6DGIJRknueR7VxBuCdw

This source provides statistics on how frequent head injuries occurs in the NHL. It then explains how body checking and stick checking lead to injuries during games.

I plan to use this source to show how often injuries occur when playing hockey and how the lack of gear around the neck may also have a factor in how often these head injuries occur.

Source 5: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/192230

This source explains how you are more prone to injury in the NHL when you only wear a half face sheild. It explains the statistics of wearing a face shield vs wearing a half face shield and how drastic the difference in injury is between the two.

I plan on using this source to explain the pros of wearing a full face shield when playing in the NHL and the benefits it has for not only the longevity of the players career, but also the safety that comes with it.

Bibliography – Ilovemydog

1. (PDF) Pete Seeger, musical revolutionary – researchgate. (n.d.).

Background: This book dives into the life and impact of American folk musician Pete Seeger. It talks about Seeger’s significant role in the revival of American folk music and his ability to use his music for social and political activism. It also speaks on how he advocated for causes such as civil rights, labor rights, and peace. The book provides a comprehensive biography of Seeger and his career trajectory too.

How I used it: I used this book about Pete Seeger to support the idea that musicians during the 60s and 70s almost always used their music to speak about global issues. The example I took from this book was Seeger’s song “Waist Deep In The Big Muddy,” which was about the pointlessness of the Vietnam War. Using this example I supported the idea mentioned.

    2. Bharti, A. (2024, February 5). “shame on you!” Grammys under fire for cutting off Annie Lennox’s mic as she pleads for ceasefire in Gaza. MEAWW.

Background: The article speaks about Scottish singer-songwriter and activist, Annie Lennox, who was cut off on live television while speaking on and making a plea to the people for a ceasefire in Gaza. The article talks about the details of the incident as well as the reactions from the audience and the public.

How I used it: I used this article to speak about censorship and how it has continued in the modern world. As well as supporting my reasoning that artists these days are scared of the censorship and blacklisting that comes with using their platforms. The example from the article was Annie Lennox’s cut plea about Gaza. I also used this article to highlight that a modern musician was using their platform to speak out against the injustices of the world.

    3. Higa, K. (2022, July 19). 15 artists using music to promote human rights. Human Rights Careers.

Background: In this article, there are 15 artists talked about who use their music to promote human rights. The article talks about artists utilizing their platforms and it talks about multiple musicians and artists who have very diverse ranges. The article provides examples of what the artists mentioned have done.

How I used it: I used this article to give examples of musicians who used their platforms and music during the 60s and 70s to advocate for change. I gave examples like Pete Townshend and Sting. Both musicians inspired others during that time to speak up about global issues present in society.

    4. Anderson, M. (2018, July 11). 1. public attitudes toward political engagement on social media. Pew Research Center: Internet, Science & Tech.

Background: This article provides information on research conducted by the Pew Research Center that talks about public sentiments and attitudes regarding political engagement on social media platforms. The research was done due to the rise of the relevancy of social media in modern society and times. The article delves into multiple aspects of political engagement that can be seen on social media.

How I used it: I used this article to provide proof that many Americans now use social media to engage in social and political activities. I also used this article to show that now artists are losing the grip they had on their listeners causing people to become less engaged in social issues.

    5. Herron, I. (2022, May 25). The complicated relationship of music and cancel cultureYouth Time Magazine: News that Inspires, Updates that Matter.

Background: This article speaks on cancel culture and how it intertwines with the music industry. Cancel culture has become a modern”trend” seen within the younger generation. The article gives examples of musicians who have faced backlash as well as talks about musicians’ opinions on cancel culture.

How I used it: I used this article to provide a quote saying that an artist’s biggest fear is being canceled. This supports my research proving that cancel culture is keeping musicians/artists from using their music to speak about injustices.

    6. Laura. (2001, September 6). Music stars complain about stringent contractsThe New York Times.

Background: This article goes into depth about the music industry and the contracts musicians make with labels. It talks about musicians’ relationships with the contracts and also speaks about historically faced issues related to the terms and conditions of their contracts. The article gives a lot of examples of issues that come with contracts as well as examples of artists who struggled with the consequences.

How I used it: I used this article to give an example of an artist who got stuck in a contract that she would have to be in for 30 years. This is to show that the industry has power over musicians and what they put out.

    7. CBS Interactive. (n.d.). Ed Sheeran says he’s breaking free from industry pressures with new album “Autumn variations”: “I don’t care what people think.” CBS News.

Background: This article is about an interview that was had with Ed Sheeran and he discusses his want to make new music and he also speaks about his mindset towards the industry pressures. He talks about creative freedom as well as the challenges he has faced while being a musician.

How I used it: I used this article to talk about how the music industry really pressures artists into making hits and not music that they actually care about. Ed Sheeran speaks about how the industry wants bigger and better music, but not anything that actually comes from the heart. Sheeran also mentions that the industry doesn’t always let artists create the music that they wish to create.

    8. Guardian News and Media. (2023, July 27). “no one knew what to do”: When Sinéad O’Connor ripped up the Pope’s photo on TV – the inside story. The Guardian.

Background: This article goes into the incident that occurred on “Saturday Night Live” with Sinéad O’Connor. It describes the reactions to O’Connor ripping the Pope’s picture on live television as well as the aftermath. The article goes into the events that led up to it, O’Connor’s perspective on the incident, her motivations leading up to it, as well as the impact she left on the world.

How I used it: I used this article to provide a real-life example of cancel culture and the effects it has on artists who use their platform or music for activism. During this time O’Connor wasn’t liked around the world due to the “outrageous” act she pulled on stage.

    9. Garn, T. (2024, February 15). Boygenius dismantles industry misogynist at Grammys. X96.

Background: This article talks about Boygenius and their involvement with the speech they had during the Grammy’s confronting misogyny within the music industry. The article talks about how they called out specific people, like the ex-CEO of the Grammy’s, and how they are involved in the industry and how the public reacted.

How I used it: I used this article to show how artists may use public platforms to speak out against issues, but won’t use their music to do the same. Which differs from the classic tradition seen before in music from the 60s and 70s.

    10. Penalosa, D. (n.d.). Performative activism does more harm than good. The Epitaph.

Background: This article goes into depth about the performative activism that has become present in today’s society. It speaks about the insincere and superficial concern that people have in their support for social causes.

How I used it: I used this article to speak about how now a lot of artists say things about social causes, but don’t actually care about the change they are talking about. I also used it to show that there has been a shift within music today compared to the music that came before it because music now doesn’t call for change in society like it once used to.

    11. Smith, C. (2023, February 10). 4 modern day artists who use their music to speak on real-world issues. The Fox Magazine.

Background: This article talks about modern musicians who have used their music to speak about social problems. These musicians are discussed in a positive light and talk about the songs they produce that have brought attention to pressing real-world issues.

How I used it: I used the article to talk about the musicians who have continued to use their platforms and music for good. I also used it to show how the number has really dwindled compared to the 60s and 70s.

    Bibliography (Proposal +5) – Temporal

proposal- my proposal is to show how curse words even came to be in the first place-how some words are considered “vulgar”. The main idea is that a lot of the time it happens because they are part of the language used by the common peasant, and thus not sophisticated, and this evolves over time. In other words, they became vulgar because of the people who used them. In my research, I will attempt to explain the etymology of each word to draw connections as to their origins. I will also explain the important war that merged two languages and has a lot to do with the origin of curse words.

source 1 vulgar | Etymology of vulgar by etymonline

This article explains the etymology of the word vulgar, how it originally meant common but now has a meaning of disgusting and vile.

I plan to use this to explain that the common language was seen as bad, as vulgar has such a negative connotation, but just means common.

source 2 The Norman Conquest and the English Language: English Meets FrenchMy English Language

an explanation of the Norman conquest of the English as a result of the battle of hastings, which had a profound effect on the English language due to the merging of French and English people.

I will use this information to explain how the Norman elites saw some of the English language as obscene, and how that view of obscenity stills carries on today.

source 3 The History of Swear Words: Where the &%@! Do They Come From? | Discover Magazine

this article is a general history of swear words from different cultures and time periods, including their origin and nature.

This will be used to explain the origin of swear words from multiple different perspectives of culture, to give an idea of the general pattern around how they form in any given place in the world.

    source 4 https://medium.com/@ianvizarra/battle-of-hastings-the-war-that-changed-the-course-of-english-language-forever-c85f3d1269b7

this is another article on the Norman conquest, specifically one that provides more detail about the battle of hastings, as well as Norman and French words that merged into the English language.

This will be used to explain the origin of certain English words, and how that relates to the origin of English curse words, as well as the differences in the language used by the common person and the elites.

    source 5 https://www.etymonline.com/word/shit

this one is pretty simple, it’s the etymology of the word shit.

This is a prime example of the banning of supposedly “vulgar” language. Shit was simply the English word for feces, but that was deemed to inappropriate to the Norman elites, so instead I suppose we must say a word that has the exact same meaning but sounds different.

    Toxic Bedrooms by Walter Bader

This book is a comprehensive, evidence-based guide to a quality, non-toxic night’s sleep. Specifically, this book looks at chronic sleep problems associated with conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and general lung impairment. The main culprit Walter Bader focuses on is mattresses, ladened with polyurethane foam and other chemical additives.

This is a scholarly source essential to my understanding of how petrochemical based common bedroom items can affect the average consumers health.

    Source #2

A review article published by the journal of Environmental Research titled “Human health risks due to exposure to inorganic and organic chemicals from
textiles: A review” by Joaquim Rovira and José L. Domingo.

This source gleans information about everyday toxins that have leached into the textile industry, thus our everyday clothing. It points out risks associated with petrochemicals such as flame retardants and dyes. This source is a great complementary piece to the other sources mentioned for it expands the playing field to not just the aspect of sleep, but health all-encompassing in relation to textiles.

    Source #3

A chapter from “Impact of Textile Product Emissions: Toxicological Considerations in Assessing Indoor Air Quality and Human Health” by Mansoor Bhat, Fatma Erasion, Kadir Gedik, and Eftade O’ Gaga.

This source provides a detailed description of textile processing while also acknowledging their emissions. The chapter highlights a variety of chemicals given off as byproducts in relation to everyday products such as carpets and clothing. Also, the chapter looks at not just dermal contact as a point of ingesting these chemicals, but also from the standpoint of indoor air pollution.

    Source #4

An article titled “Microfiber Emissions from Functionalized Textiles: Potential Threat for Human Health and Environmental Risks” by Shanmugam Sudarshan, Sekar Harikrishnan, and more.

This scholarly article goes into all microfibers, especially their biodegradability potential. In addition, it compares its counterparts, natural material (e.g., cotton and wool) in relation to its biodegradability. The article hones in on the textile industry’s impact on marine life, as well. The aspect of marine life is an aspect this source provides that the others don’t.

    Source #5

From a book titled, Textile Science and Clothing Technology by Subramanian Senthilkannan Muthu, a chapter named “Roadmap to Sustainable Textiles and
    Clothing”.

This source reviews certifications and claims of labels within the textile industry. It is important to navigate these labels and certifications to understand the highest quality textile products to ensure better health.

*All these sources aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the textile industry — their standards, measures, and effectiveness with regard to human health in the form of dermal contact, indoor air pollution and water supply. These sources come in the form of books and research articles analyzing the textile industry and their byproducts.

Article 1: Africa should Screen Americans for Measles

It seems counterintuitive that a Nigerian writer would mock the United States’ concern over the Ebola outbreak, suggesting that Africa should screen Americans. Nevertheless, this is exactly what Elnathan John does in his article, “Nigerian writer mocks US disease concern, saying Africa should screen Americans.” John’s piece highlights the double standards and hypocrisy that often accompany discussions about global health crises. John begins by pointing out the irony of the situation.. while Africa has been dealing with various diseases for centuries, it is only when these diseases reach the Western world that they become a cause for global panic. He argues that this selective sense of concern is rooted in a careless attitude towards Africa, where the continent is seen as a victim in need of Western intervention. John criticizes the Western media for perpetuating stereotypes and misinformation about Africa. He highlights how the media often portrays Africa as a monolithic entity, ignoring the vast diversity within the continent. This oversimplification not only preserves stereotypes but also hinders efforts to address health crises effectively. In his sarcastic tone, the author suggests that Africa should start screening Americans for diseases such as obesity and diabetes, which are prevalent in the Western world. This mocking remark serves as a reminder that health issues are not exclusive to any particular region and that a global approach is necessary. John’s article serves as a thought-provoking critique of the Western world’s response to global health crises. It challenges the double standards and stereotypes that often accompany discussions about Africa and highlights the need for a more nuanced and inclusive approach to addressing these issues.

Article 2: Free Heroin to Battle Addiction

It seems counterintuitive that a city would combat heroin addiction by providing addicts with free heroin. However, that is exactly what Vancouver, Canada has been doing since 2003. The city’s controversial program, known as Insite, aims to reduce the harms associated with drug addiction by providing a safe and supervised environment for addicts to inject heroin. Supporters argue that Insite saves lives by preventing overdose deaths and reducing the spread of diseases like HIV and hepatitis C. They also believe that the program helps to connect addicts with healthcare and social services, ultimately leading to their recovery. Critics, on the other hand, argue that Insite enables drug addiction and sends the wrong message to society. They believe that providing free heroin only perpetuates the cycle of addiction and does not address the underlying issues that lead to drug abuse. Insite has been successful in many ways. Studies have shown that the program has reduced overdose deaths and increased the use of addiction treatment services. It has also been credited with reducing crime rates in surrounding areas. While the program may seem unconventional, Vancouver’s approach to combating heroin addiction has proven to be effective. By providing addicts with a safe and closely supervised environment, the city is able to address the immediate health risks associated with drug use while also connecting addicts with the resources they need to recover.

Topic 3: Mammogram Team Learns from it’s Errors

It seems counterintuitive that a team of mammogram experts would learn from their mistakes, but that is exactly what happened at the University of California, San Francisco. In an article published in The New York Times, the author discusses how this team of radiologists used their errors as an opportunity for growth and improvement. The team, led by Dr. Bonnie Joe, recognized that mistakes were inevitable in the field of mammography. Instead of ignoring or hiding these errors, they decided to confront them head-on. They created a system where radiologists could openly discuss their mistakes and learn from each other’s experiences. The article highlights the importance of a culture of learning and improvement in the medical field. It emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to be open and honest about their mistakes, as this is the only way to truly learn from them. By openly acknowledging and discussing their mistakes, they were able to identify areas for improvement and implement changes that resulted in a significant reduction in errors. This serves as a valuable lesson for all healthcare professionals, highlighting the importance of a community of learning and improvement in the medical field.

A Nigerian writer mocks US disease concern, saying that Africa should screen Americans for measles-It seems counterintuitive that America would try to make the Africans that travel have to get vaccinated because they believe that anyone who immigrated to the United States has to prove that they were fully vaccinated. The U.S. believed that they have the highest percentage of people fully vaccinated and immune to these diseases but they are wrong and the stats prove it as well. Most o f the children in that had and were receiving the symptoms were the one that parents refused to give them the vaccine which results in the Africans proving their point that if they have top b3 tested then the America should be too based on facts like these. Immigrants have more to fear than US-born kids because they are exposed to way more and they catch things very easily and with that share and give it to others spreading it around.

‘Hidden’ species may be surprisingly common-It seems counterintuitive that Cryptic species as we know are really all around us under our noses and we don’t even realize it. So far with the data collected, cryptic species are found in equal proportions throughout all major branches of the animal kingdom. They are predominantly found in insects and reptiles and likely in tropical rather than temperate regions. Scientists are still trying to figure it all out trying to get the answer to this question: How many cryptic species exist? A discovery was made in 2001 when study found elephants that were actually two genetically distinct, non interbreeding species. Researchers are still on the hunt for more of these cryptic species and hopefully willing to identify them all.

How NPR Got It Wrong on Monsanto’s Super weeds-  It seems counterintuitive that farmers are steadily applying toxic herbicide cocktails to their crops in order to keep up with the weed evolution. With millions of acres of crops that need to fight off weeds in the matter that the weed will overgrow and destroy the crops. Scientists claim that Roundup Ready technology is Highly unlikely to resist weed, also stating that the plants that are affected by this have a gene that makes it effective and modified to  grow robustly. In the early 1980’s samples were taken and tested and research found out that the gene actually didn’t not interfere with the plant growth at all.In Conclusion Monsanto denies the facts proven and believe in what he had made but in this day and age the Roundup Ready technology does not complete and would under the weight of super weeds unable to be resist to it.

Close call in death ruling of potential organ donor.

It seems counterintuitive that the same doctors whose jobs are to help and save their patients’ lives are possibly compromising care in order to take advantage of their organ donor status; therefore speeding up the process of a patient’s death, reaping the reward of organs, and giving one (or many) patient(s) another chance to continue living. Some hospitals hold no strict nor enforced guidelines regarding the steps taken to declare a patient as brain dead, which has allowed said hospitals to bend the rules of ethics. Donor networks are being described as “vultures” by some people whose loved ones hold eligible donor statuses; flocking down when there’s a patient in critical condition to see if the organs will be viable.

Prozac: What’s Race Got to Do With It?

It seems counterintuitive that external factors such as race could be influencing doctors when prescribing medications regarding mental health. Statistics present that a decent number of doctors have prescribed patients’ with Medicare or Medicaid insurance cheaper varieties of antidepressants; while prescribing white patients with private insurance new-generation antidepressants such as Prozac. These prescribing patterns are startling considering that depression isn’t more common in one race than another. There hasn’t been a clear answer as to why such disparities exist, but many have the goal of reforming healthcare standards and eradicating the unfair treatment gap.

    Do Multivitamins Really Work?

It seems counterintuitive that taking daily multivitamins may not prevent the diseases they claim to defend against, but instead could be doing more harm than good. While specific supplements are used to target deficiencies and aid in prenatal care, the collection of such a large amount of vitamins and minerals in one gummy may give our bodies more than it needs. There is a lack of regulation in the vitamin industry; there have been cases of mislabeling and inconsistent supplementation doses. Even if a person’s diet is chocked full of sugars and fats, they are still likely to be hitting their daily vitamin quota.

    End-of-Life Care

It seems counterintuitive that hospitals offer end-of-life care when all physical and monetary factors are taken into account except the patient’s end-of-life wishes. When a patient is in a state, whether comatose or not conscious enough to make a decision about their own life, it is up to the family to decide whether they want to wait and hold on to the slim chance that their loved one will wake up and recover or disconnect them from whatever is keeping them alive.

Deciding when it is time for a loved one to leave is a difficult task in itself, but add the pressure of hospitals that insist on either signing a contract stating that they will continue paying for this end-of-life care or adding their loved one to the list of possible organ donors leads this individual’s family to think about everything except their family member’s last wishes. On many occasions, family members make the decision to seek other medical perspectives since there is always doubt about how true the diagnosis is and they cling to the idea that it does not matter how many devices should be placed inside their loved one or in which conditions they will have to live after being awakened as long as they are alive and conscious. However, it is important to keep in mind what the patient’s wishes are as such and make a decision in which the patient still has a vote even without being able to communicate it.

    Organ Donor Vultures?

It seems counterintuitive that physical health professionals especially doctors misdiagnose patients with the proposal of harvesting organs for other patients who need them. For a brain-dead patient, it is impossible to communicate their intentions and desires about their body, so it is up to their family to decide if their loved one can become a donor. A potential organ donor should be treated with respect regardless of their physical conditions. Doctors have the responsibility to provide the necessary service as they would with any other patient, including patients who are waiting for a donor, instead of harassing their relatives and hastening the death process to collect organs in good condition. Accelerating this process or not doing sufficient examinations to determine if the patient can be disconnected is morally unethical since the possibility of a person being able to live is being taken away.

    Free Heroin to Battle Addiction

It seems counterintuitive that in Vancouver there are nurses supplying heroin 2 or 3 times a day to addicts to prevent them from ending up dead on the streets of this city. Stopping an addiction, especially a drug as strong as heroin, can be a non-linear process that can lead an individual to relapse multiple times and even die from an overdose. Administering a proportional amount of heroin under the supervision of nurses or doctors reduces the chances of more addicts dying. They may also find comfort in health professionals who can fuel the desire to give up this addiction completely.
