Types of Crying

College students are constantly exposed to stress and anxiety and like any other human being, they have the need to free themselves from these feelings and emotions in some way. The most predominant factors in a human being, such as but not limited to stress and anxiety, are those that also induce an individual to cry as a source of release of emotions. Crying is a commonly involuntary action that can cause an individual to express happiness and joy or the opposite as pain and sadness. The concrete thing is that crying causes an individual to have a reaction, either positive or negative depending on what type of crying the individual is dealing with.

The categorization of an individual’s crying occurs according to the initial state, then there is an intermediate cry and eventually an effect that will help identify whether this type of cry was therapeutic or not. An example of a non-therapeutic cry is a physical pain cry. If an individual receives a very strong slap that produces tears, that individual may become angry, but it is the pain of the slap that will cause crying to occur, which would leave no other result or effect than crying in response to the slap. But what if there is no physical action that produces this crying? Perhaps what if it is a grief cry, helplessness cry, anger cry, guilt cry? This would indicate that different initial states can be affected in different ways by crying.

For a college student, helplessness cry comes from the initial state of feeling that something is too difficult or impossible to achieve whether related to something academic or interpersonal relationships. In the journal, “Crying: discussion of its basic reasons and uses” Maria Miceli explains that people do not usually cry in situations that are considered frustrating unless they believe that it is impossible to fix or change what is happening. It is the feeling of not being able to do anything about it, even if you really want to. Miceli later explains how “Tears can also serve as weapons, i.e., they can express not only a request for help but also a sort of claim or protest.” Empathize that tears can be a type of emotional tool that can be implemented in the midst of an initial state, in this case of helplessness, and obtain a liberating effect by being able to express a protest or a call for help to resolve the situation being experienced.

Additionally, in the article, “Crying it out: The Role of Tears in Stress and Coping of College Students” by Davis, Wendy Ellen, explains how for many centuries the idea of crying after stressful or helpless situations was perceived as a reserved activity for people who lack power, specifically women and children. But as the years passed and more studies were carried out, they came to the conclusion that tears could be acquired as a means of communication and as a protection mechanism that could later be induced into new types of therapy.

Like helplessness cry, an angry cry comes tied to a similar concept. An anger cry is usually the result of a fight or aggression, whether physical or verbal, from one individual towards another. In the case of a physical fight, as mentioned above, physical contact is not what causes tears but rather the anger and helplessness of not being able to do anything either for fear that the other individual will react more violently or because it is not socially accepted. According to Miceli and a study in which she conducted informal interviews with university students about the reasons why they cry, she found that many times during an altercation between two individuals, one of them is more likely to cry due to the helplessness of not being able to express the full capacity of their anger. This reaction is also closely related to another feeling of not being able to turn that anger into some type of action against the person who they believe did something wrong. This usually occurs when someone feels angry about something they consider unfair where they often do not have the ability to do something about perceived misconduct which ends in anger crying.

Two other types of crying that are strongly related to helplessness are grief and guilt cry. In the case of grief crying, not all college students are exposed to this type of crying during their academic career but it is still worth examining due to the state that the individual is subjected to before crying occurs. According to Miceli, the inability to do something goes beyond mere physical limitations but is also related to the inability to move forward after a loss. That is, it is not simply the helplessness of not being able to return to a person you lost (physically), but also the helplessness of not being able to move forward and emotionally let go of this individual that consequently leads to a cry of helplessness due to grief. As evidence, in the study carried out by Miceli, the participants gave two specific results: either they cried because they were aware that they would no longer be able to express their affection or simply talk to the person they lost again or because they did not know how to manage their emotions, making them feel incapable of moving forward on your own.

The same goes for the cry of guilt. Individuals who feel guilty cry from the helplessness of not being able to undo what they did that harmed another individual. They can reward the individual but they cannot completely undo or erase the mistake made. Another aspect that Miceli explains in her journal is how crying out of guilt can also manifest when people feel disappointed by their actions that go against their self-perception, that is, the internal vision they have of themselves, leading to a feeling of not recognizing one’s own identity.

In summary, being able to identify the types of crying of an individual is crucial to being able to conclude whether the result of that crying can increase an individual’s mood to a more positive one. To know this, the initial state of an individual and the factor that is inducing this crying must be analyzed. If there is an emotional justification for this crying, it may result in therapeutic crying.

The word “mean” holds many meanings. In the math world, a “mean” is a “is a numeric quantity representing the center of a collection of numbers and is intermediate to the extreme values of a set of numbers”. Another definition “intend to convey, indicate, or refer to (a particular thing or notion); signify.” or “they are being unkind to another person, for example by not allowing them to do something”. There are many different definitions to a word, and many people intercept different meanings and feelings for words,  like the word “mean”.  In society today, people are haters and some people will go out of their way to be mean to you. They will yell at you, complain at you, write hateful comments on social media. The point is that many people have different definitions for different words. What you think is correct or right might not reflect on the other person. Many people in this world have different versions of the word “mean”.  That’s not to say that what they’re doing isn’t hurtful, but the word might have a different meaning to them.

To one person for example, voicing opinions could be considered hate. They might think it’s mean because you’re not agreeing with what that person has to say. Many people consider conversations or arguments mean or hateful all because the people in the conversation dont have the same viewpoint. That also applies to in person and on social media sites like Instagram. If you’re in a reply thread with people who think differently than you, you could think that the person is being mean, but they just have a different stance on that subject and it’s okay.

Unfortunately, we all have different viewpoints on what we consider hate. “A social approval-based theory of online hate suggests that the motivations and gratifications of those who post hate messages are not primarily to antagonize their ostensible victims’ ‘. It all goes back to viewpoints. The “haters” might be posting something that wasn’t necessarily rude, it was just misinterpreted. Obviously, there are people on the internet and the real world that are just straight up rude, but then there is a group of people who are painted as a “hater” but they are just voicing how they feel.

The impact of being mean to someone  can be intense. It can lead to feelings of sadness, or anger. It can lead to a low self-confidence, and behavioral responses. The people that are hateful just get to hide behind a screen for example, being mean and negative, but don’t have to deal with the negative effects. That’s the issue with social media. Some random person can sit in the room behind a screen and tear another person down, but does not receive any negative reprcussions.

Even though there are many positive effects of social media, there are negative effects as well and this negative effect seems to be a very popular issue around the world. That is why I think that hate should be banned from social media. Freedom of speech is a topic in the social media field. Some people say things that they shouldn’t on social media, but then defend themselves by saying “but I can say that I have freedom of speech”. No you can’t, because of the laws. Social media laws and guidelines are different from each other. These platforms have their own conditions and terms/ guidlines. The “freedom of speech” card can’t be used because of these laws and they can and will ban you. But the issue is, the people keep making different accounts and will most definitely find a way to come back and hate on you and tear you down. Because of these laws, people can’t get into trouble that’s legal oriented, but they can still lose their jobs if their employer sees this hate,  or lose  “brand deals’ ‘ if they’re an influencer.

If we find a way to ban hateful users permanently, if the evidence is credible and sufficient, we might finally be able to positively use social media again. Everybody, no matter who, should be able to go on social media and post what makes them happy. The hateful people that tear others down negatively affect so many people and it makes people feel like they can’t share what they want.

In conclusion, people tend to have different viewpoints on what being considered “mean” is. We need to be able to live a life or show our lives on SM, without getting hated on. It would make the world a better place, and the positive effects would really show. It would boost people’s confidence, improve their mental health, and also improve acceptance.

Hockey is a sport played across the world. It ranges from Town Leagues, to National Leagues. This sport is enjoyed by people all over, of all age ranges, but now it poses a safety question. Safety is defined as a condition of being protected or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. Now you may be asking yourself aren’t all National League sports dangerous? The answer would be yes, however the statement I am making is that Hockey is the most dangerous. Hockey should be more regulated, as well as protected when it comes to the gear the players wear on the ice.

Hockey is the only National League sport that involves a very sharp blade for the duration of the game. While the blade is not intended for misuse or injury, there have been times in which it has inflicted injury or even death. Adam Johnson, a former NHL player, tragically died on the ice after his neck was cut by a blade during a hockey game. The lack of neck gear provided during the game could have completely changed the outcome of this event, an act of safety is not something one would use to describe what happened.

As a fan in the stands, imagine seeing your favorite playing bleed out on the ice due to an injury during the game. An otherwise healthy adult male bleeds out in front of 20,000 people due to a lack of neck gear. The trauma this not only causes the fans, but the families of the players this occurs to is despicable. The neck gear that could have saved this man’s life is not required by the NHL, had it been a life would have been saved among many others.

Most people enjoy watching a Hockey game not only for the love of the game, but for the thrill of it. It is an exciting part of the game when you see two players get into a fight on the ice. It is also reassuring when you see a Referee break up the fight before someone gets seriously injured, but that is not the case in all circumstances. An academic journal contained the story of how a Hockey Players career ended due to a fight on the ice. During this fight Steve Moore was struck in the back of the head then his face was pounded into the ice. The result of this was the loss of a career, and the penalty for it was a suspension and forfeit of pay. Had there been more regulation when it comes to the referees stepping, the injuries in this case would have been far less substantial.

The question we should ask ourselves is why there was no intervention while this was happening. The refs are there to regulate the game and make sure it is played correctly. They are also supposed to step in when a fight gets too intense. For this reason, there is no explanation to why no one stepped in, this caused something similar to a domino effect. A fight occurs, the referee does not step in, a player was seriously injured.

Making a change to a dangerous sport is not something out of the ordinary. A rule was changed in the NFL relating to tackling and blocking. Prior to this change in 1968 there were 36 fatal injuries, as well as 30 paralyzing injuries. By 1990 there were 0 fatalities as a result of playing National League Football, this would be the first time there were 0 fatalities since 1931. 1 change in the rules changed the life of so many people and the people to come after them. A change like this in the NHL could result in a safer yet still enjoyable game.

Something the NHL has introduced is fines when you receive a penalty. Whilst this may make you not want to commit an act that could result in a penalty, it does not stop you from doing so. Therefore unless the penalty fines are so substantial in which it causes one’s concern of financial status it is simply useless. Most Hockey players make millions of dollars per season, so a fine costing a couple thousand dollars is not going to phase them.

Sports is something that brings people together. This means that safety should be more of a concern when it comes to playing a National League Game. Dangerous is not a word that is used lightly, so that means when something is considered dangerous it should not be dealt with lightly. There are many solutions that could be put in the NHL world to just simply reduce the risk of fatalities on the ice.

The Cognitive Benefits of Working Out

Throughout time working out has been thought to only help you with physical benefits. Like staying in shape and being healthy. What if I told you there are not only physical benefits from working out but cognitive mental acuity. Leading to a healthier mindset and mental health. Working out can actually help you alter the way you approach obstacles. It also can help you from getting mental disorders.

People are probably wondering how physical activity could help you psychologically. Well there have been multiple studies over the past couple of years that show exercising is very beneficial in that aspect. When you work out there is a part in your brain called the cerebral cortex. That is the part of the brain that helps you think and learn. Working out helps strengthen that part of your brain. When that part of the brain is strengthened then it lowers the probability of getting a mental disorder. This is a great way for people who have mental disorders to try and get rid of it. Or if people who want to prevent mental disorders can lower their chances.

There are studies that prove people who work out have a faster cognitive processing. This means that those individuals process thoughts and ideas quicker than one you do not indulge in physical activity. In the article “Reviewing on physical exercise and cognitive function” it states,“This demonstrates that participating in physical exercise programs exerts benefits in the physical and psychological spheres, and it is probable that physically active individuals have a faster cognitive processing.” Faster cognitive processing can lead to better mental health and meaningful thoughts. It is not too late to speed up your cognitive processing though. One can start working out today and  will see benefits in the next coming weeks and the long run.

Participating in physical exercise can lower your risk of getting attacked by mental disorders. In recent analysis found physical activity has a significant increase in cognitive performance in elderly who have a cognitive deficit. This proves that exercising is an important factor in protecting cognitive decline.

When trying to attempt to strengthen and fasten cognitive processes it depends on your workouts. Doing simple workouts is ok but not great. Try not doing lazy exercises because it could lessen your cognitive. This is because you are taking easy ways out. When doing exercises make sure it is helping you physically and mentally. If you go too hard though it could lessen your cognitive ability because it causes too much fatigue. This is only for a few minutes though. This makes cognitive processes speed up a ton. In a study made by our group, 23 healthy women aged from 60 to 70 years were submitted to 60 minutes jogging 3 times a week, and as complementary activity, they were submitted to stretching and flexibility exercises. After 6 months training, it was found an improvement in the attention, memory, agility, and in the mood pattern in 17 sedentary women. This shows that more than half of the participants had not only physical benefits but cognitive benefits.

Working out is a great way to improve your mental. People work out to relieve stress because it is better than eating a bunch of junk food or being lazy. If one is lazy and does not have that motivation to really do anything, exercising is a great way to get out of that. It is doing something you do not want which ultimately changes your mindset. When you do not want to do something but you end up doing it. After finishing it one feels amazing. This is because working out is not something easy. This can totally change the way you start approaching opportunities in life.

People mentally are unorganized and lack a schedule in their daily life. Working out is a great way to get a person mentally straight. Meaning when you work out it is a part of your day to day schedule. So when someone is planning their schedule for the week or for the next day you have to plan your day around working out. This makes one day a lot more organized. It also helps strengthen your mind because one completes everything in the day needed to be successful. This then leads to the person being stress free. This is all by just working out for a total of forty five minutes to an hour.

Exercising is a huge part of a steady lifestyle. Exercising also gives you an enormous sense of well being. If you cultivate a healthy exercise routine then this will improve your mental health. Working out helps people that are depressed and have anxiety make it go away or help control it. When exercising you are usually doing it for close to an hour or even more. This helps clear you mind or even expand what you are stressed about. This is great because it solves your problem and can even help find why you are stressed. “The Health Benefits of Exercise” states, “ Exercise has been proven to be effective for some people in treating and/or managing depression and anxiety.” There is a chemical in your body called cortisol which is basically “the stress hormone.” Exercise wears this chemical down which makes a person more relaxed after a workout.

In Conclusion, working out should not only be thought out to be great for your physical body but a huge part of keeping your mental health together. When people think of working out they only think about the physical part of it. People should understand that it can help you on a deeper level. Like cognitive mental acuity is also important when working out because it can improve how fast you think.

Riding the Waves of Sustainability:
Can Renewable Energy Solutions Save the Day?

Over time, the creative spirit of humanity has changed in tandem with the demands and goals of society. Our creative expressions, which reflect our experiences and values, have frequently served useful purposes, from intricate temple designs to prehistoric cave art. The search for sustainable energy sources in the modern era, like biomass burning alongside coal and wave energy, is a reflection of this constant process of innovation and adaptation.

As a renewable energy source, wave energy—derived from the regular motion of ocean waves—has a lot of potential. Using wave energy provides a sustainable substitute for fossil fuels, which are increasingly becoming less and less common as we strive to fight climate change. Wave motion is a consistent and plentiful energy source that can be transformed into electricity using state-of-the-art technologies. By utilizing this enormous resource, we can lessen our reliance on finite fossil fuels and cut back on harmful emissions, protecting the environment for coming generations.

In a similar vein, sustainable cofiring, which combines biomass and coal to generate electricity, provides a means of producing energy in a more environmentally friendly manner. Biomass offers a renewable alternative to coal, derived from organic materials such as wood and agricultural residues. The integration of biomass into coal-fired power plants can effectively reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the ecological consequences associated with energy production. This strategy encourages the wise use of natural resources while simultaneously battling climate change.

The incorporation of biomass cofiring and wave energy into our energy landscape represents humankind’s dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. These cutting-edge innovations highlight our shared commitment to addressing the pressing issues brought on by ecological degradation and climate change. We can move toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future and protect the health of our planet for future generations by investing in renewable energy solutions.

In addition, the development and implementation of these renewable energy technologies present opportunities for innovation as well as financial gains. Investments made by the public and private sectors in renewable energy infrastructure promote employment growth and advance technology. For skilled workers, the renewable energy sector offers a wide range of opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, and research and development. Adopting renewable energy helps to reduce the effects of climate change while simultaneously promoting global prosperity and economic growth.

In summary, sustainable biomass cofiring and wave energy are game-changing answers to today’s problems. These green energy innovations perfectly capture our continuous quest for resilient environments and sustainable development. We can steer towards a more equitable and clean energy landscape that benefits the planet and its inhabitants by utilizing the power of waves and biomass. We can fully utilize renewable energy and steer the world toward a better future for everybody if we work together and are committed to the same goals.

Self-criticism and Social Media

In the era of digital communication, social media, and self-criticism have combined to create an all-encompassing impact on one’s perception of one’s body. In this sense, “self-criticism” refers to the internalized judgment people place on themselves, which is made worse by the inaccurate representations of bodies on social media. This definition becomes crucial in understanding the intricate dynamics that contribute to the worsening of body dysmorphia and the subsequent impact on mental health and social interactions. In terms of social media and self-body image, “self-criticism” refers to the internalized scrutiny brought on by the inaccurate representations of bodies on these platforms, which worsens body dysmorphia and harms mental health and social interactions.

The influence on body perception in the age of social media, digital communication, and self-criticism is made worse by the frequency of false representations on social media. “self-criticism” refers to internalized judgment and is more intense regarding the inaccurate representations of bodies on social media. One major factor in the escalation of body dysmorphia and its detrimental impacts on mental health and social interactions is the ongoing dissemination of an idealized and unrealistic representation of bodies on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Social media users frequently post carefully chosen and digitally improved photographs that substantially alter reality, which has a multidimensional impact on body image. This behavior is consistent with studies showing the conflicting effects of social media and online communication on the well-being of adolescents, stressing negative consequences. Best et al. (2014) conducted a systematic narrative review highlighting this matter’s complex nature. They observed that although technological advances online can offer benefits like heightened self-worth and a sense of social support, they can also put people at risk, worsening problems like cyberbullying, depression, and social isolation. The review’s contradicting findings highlight the need for more investigation to fully comprehend the complex relationships among social media, body image, and mental health. As social media continues to shape societal perceptions of beauty, the challenges associated with maintaining a positive self-image in the digital age remain a critical area for exploration and intervention (Best et al., 2014).

Online spaces for self-presentation and social media play a major role in the significant prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) among young users, especially in Saudi Arabia. The nation’s heavy reliance on social media hurts how people feel about their bodies, as demonstrated by the research done in 2020 by Alsaidan et al. BDD is fueled by the impossible standards established by supposed perfect bodies and carefully edited photos on social media sites like Instagram and Snapchat, which create a vicious cycle of comparison and self-criticism. 4.2% of participants in the study satisfied the criteria for BDD, with younger people having a greater risk of the condition. Notably, BDD was linked to more time spent on Snapchat and Instagram and an increased tendency to compare one’s appearance to celebrities on social media. The BDD group reported more incidents of harassment as well as a past medical history of mental health issues. According to Alsaidan et al. (2020), the study highlights the importance of promoting safe social networking behaviors and educating the public about the dangers of BDD.

The way that bodies are portrayed on social media correlates to a loss in mental health due to continuous self-criticism. People who are struggling with the increasing gap between their perceived and real identities are more likely to experience anxiety, sadness, and body dysmorphic disorders. A toxic mindset that undermines self-esteem and magnifies negative self-perceptions is fostered by frequent comparison due to social media. Furthermore, a study carried out in 2017 by Gkotsis et al. explores how social media contributes to the development of mental health disorders. The work applies informed analysis posts from the Reddit social media to identify and categorize posts on mental illness based on 11 disorder themes. The results show the potential of deep learning as a research tool, with a 91.08% accuracy rate in identifying postings connected to mental illness and a 71.37% weighted average accuracy rate in choosing the correct theme. To help with organized content and focused interventions for mental health, the study highlights how crucial it is to understand user-generated information on social media platforms (Gkotsis et al., 2017).

The impact of social media on modern society is complex and affects social relationships on a worldwide scale. According to Azzaakiyyah et al. (2023), social media offers advantages like improved connectedness, cross-cultural interaction, and emotional support. However, challenges arise, including “shared solitude,” as face-to-face interactions decline. When people create their online personas, their formation of identity changes, leading to unhealthy social comparisons and inaccurate self-perception. Social media promotes inclusivity and community development but makes it easier for false information to propagate. Fostering digital literacy, communication abilities, and moral online conduct are necessary to strike a balance. Education is essential to preserve the integrity of human connections in the digital age because it enables people to navigate the digital landscape responsibly and strike a good balance between virtual and in-person encounters. The influence goes beyond the person and impacts social relationships. Genuine connections suffer from avoidance behaviors resulting from self-criticism. Social media, which was first created to help people connect, unintentionally becomes an escape from loneliness as people avoid deep conversations out of fear of being judged for their presumed physical flaws.

In conclusion, the complex relationship between “self-criticism” and self-body image in the context of social media and self-image creates a complicated web of influences. This has been shown to possibly worsen body dysmorphia and has a severe influence on mental health and interpersonal relationships. While social media can be beneficial in allowing people to communicate and have long-lasting relationships with different individuals in all locations of the world, It is vital to acknowledge the important implications of self-criticism due to social media. Social media can allow individuals to develop an online community that embraces inclusivity and support. Moving forward, it is important to encourage people to accept and value who they really are. This becomes critical for overcoming the obstacles presented by the digital age, encouraging sincere relationships, and fostering community well-being.

New Balance shoes are the best shoes on the market

Like other shoes, New Balance has been constantly improving, rising, and growing on the charts. People have their preferences on how they would like their shoes; some like them for the fashion, the comfortability, and others for reasons of their own.

The shoes we wear usually strive to be of the highest quality, whether that’s the finest quality of leather, rubber, wool, polyester, etc. The company is able to use 91% preferred leather and 64% preferred cotton in their manufacturing and is expected to reach 100% by 2025. Other companies don’t compete within this range because they don’t reach numbers this close, and New Balance has a clear goal in mind: to be the number one shoe on the market.

Around 80%, or about $4.24 billion, of the total revenue of New Balance in 2022 is just from its footwear. To sum it up, footwear has given it the greatest profit and brought eyes from young kids to even the elderly.

New Balance is one of the oldest brands, first founded in 1906, and it wasn’t until 1938 that it joined the running scene, developing shoes. Out of all the competitors, New Balance has been the first to hit the scene, still standing in one of the top positions and still rising up.

In an era where Nike and Adidas are sportswear giants, New Balance has emerged as leaders in cultural design. The brand has consistently pushed the boundaries of excellence, steadily climbing the ranks to become a standout in the footwear industry. The brand has never disappointed in reaching the hype of its followers. With that, it has positioned them as one of the most hyped brands in the market right now. New Balance dominated during Men’s Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023 and became the new go-to sneaker for sneakerheads and the general consumer alike.

You might want to know how and why the rise of New Balance is so crucial. Well, it’s because they figured out what’s important and what would make them reach the top. They looked in a different direction when all the other competitors were all pushing for the same goals. They took notice of the fact that maybe if they improved the quality of the shoes and made them better than all the others, they would reach the top. That idea and that change that they made to their brand made that distracting change for them and made them rise to the top of the scale from all the others.

In the past, New Balances were known as “The Dad Shoes”and when all the new technologies and new ideas, designs, and brands of shoes came out, they were pushed over to the side, but recent trends and styles brought them back to life. That’s where they capitalized on the nostalgia of it and surged the 90s fashion `Dad shoes’ ‘, and that’s where New Balance tapped into the retro-inspired designs and won the hearts of many consumers.

The pandemic that hit us in 2020, also known as COVID-19, on a global scale caused issues with the supply chain caused by the pandemic, resulting in an increasingly scarce product supply for everyone. “Supply and demand have a big part to play as well in their ascension. The effect of the pandemic delays has resulted in slow and limited releases, says Blackman, an Australian sneaker r collector. Simultaneously, after the pandemic, brand collaborations have gotten more globally diverse, with partnerships with many influencers spreading the brand worldwide. Different social media platforms also had a huge impact on disseminating the brand across the world.

Another key success factor for the brand was leaning on the ambassadors and the tastemakers. They were hesitant about it for a while, but to reach the top, it seemed like the right thing to do. The New Balance ambassador list includes icons like Sadio Mane, Jack Harlow, Kawhi Leonard, etc. Its decision to hire and team up with Aime Leon Dore’s Teddy Santis to lead the Made in USA division of the company. It was just great decisions made, which pushed them even more forward into becoming the leading brand on the market.

New Balance has committed to incorporating innovative technologies into its footwear and designs that will enhance the performance of the individuals that are wearing them. This includes comfort cushioning, stability features, material quality, and being designed for specific activities. In addition, New Balance has made a wide range of products tailored for a variety of sports. Whether you’re a runner, a walker, a basketball player, a soccer player, or even someone looking for comfortable everyday shoes, New Balance is best suited for these needs.

The revenue growth between 2022 and 2023 shows a steady growth of new balances rising to the top of the charts. In the monthly percentages, it’s shown how New Balance has taken the top spot in becoming the best shoes on the market. Starting in March 2023, the rise of the brand surpassed Nike, which was at the top and has consistently been ahead of Nike ever since. In 2022, the brand reported making over $5 billion in revenue, and the CEO, Joe Preston, predicted that over the next few years the brand will double in size, hitting $10 billion in revenue.

Their recipe for success in their brand wasn’t because they were trying to do what all the leading brands did; it was solely because they saw where the focus needed to be and drove right towards it, and that was what got them to the top. Sometimes it’s okay to take a different route from the one that’s already written.

The brand has definitely mastered giving their customers the greatest product—products that meet the eyes—something that is continuously evolving and getting better. Reaching different groups and hitting the different diversities, what is the result? The brand has reached unprecedented heights, establishing itself in the industry, making its mark, and producing footwear that is widely regarded as the pinnacle of quality and performance in the market.

Elitist Language

Oftentimes, people might tell you that you’re speaking incorrectly, or that your language is inappropriate or impure. However, this doesn’t have any meaning outside of pure elitism. Most attempts at trying to purify language is a result of the wealthy upper class not accepting the language of the poorer class.

For example, MIT linguist Noam Chomsky, who revolutionized the filed of linguistics at a young age, was once asked in an interview what, say, the French theorists mean when they say they want to keep the French language pure. “That doesn’t mean anything” (Chomsky, 1989) was his response. Language is extremely subject to change and evolution. Chomsky goes on to explain that in fact, for most of history, and even in many places today, people speak a different language than the people in the next village over, and the concept of a national language is a modern phenomenon. Because language will naturally evolve anyway, there is no point in trying to control it, and there is especially no point in trying to purify it considering some forms of language to be “impure”, whatever that means, based on things like social class.

An example of how the phenomenon specifically is targeted towards the common man is through the etymology of the word “vulgar”. You might be familiar with the word vulgar to mean disgusting or vile, and it certainly does hold that connotation, but its original meaning was simply “common” (etymonline, 2024), so essentially, a word to mean common was also the word to mean vile and gross. The reason why the word holds this meaning was because the language and habits of the common people was seen as less refined, and that connotation has stuck with the word ever since. Similarly, curse words were seen as vulgar, and the language of the common man, and thus, inappropriate, and that convention is still around today.

Another huge example of this is the idea of curse words, which are words that are deemed to be inappropriate in certain circumstances. By inappropriate, I mean that if you were to say one of these words at a formal social event, it would be considered rude or inappropriate. Some of these words include but are not limited to: “fuck”, “shit”, “piss” and “ass”. You’ll notice that these words can all be expressed as words with the same meaning, but for some reason are not considered to be inappropriate. Examples of these words, respectively, are: “intercourse”, “feces”, “urine”, and “gluteus maximus”. Now, it may seem strange that there can exist such words that are inappropriate not because of its meaning, as the meaning of words are seemingly their only important property. The origin of these words has to do with the merging of languages throughout history, as well as the role that language plays in social classes. Note, I will not be explaining the history of some other curse words that are more offensive, as their history and origin differ from the ones I will be explaining, that is curse words that have the same meaning as certain non-curse words.

The reasons for why the lower and upper class differ in language varies, but one important example is the battle of hastings. This battle took place in 1066 between the Normans (norse/french people) and the Anglo Saxons (the ancestors of the modern day english), and the Normans were the successors. As a result, the Norman king Edward was now the ruler of England, and thus, the Normans were the ruling class, and the anglo saxons were the poor working class. (Vizarra, 2019). Now, due to the merging of these cultures, the languages also merged, changing the English language. An example of such change is the words used for food. The English were the working class, and thus, were the ones who would farm, and so the words that were used for animals come from  anglo saxon origin, such as cow or pig. However the norman elites were the ones being served the food, and so the words used for the animal once it was cooked and prepared were the words that the normans used for those animals, like beef and pork, both of norman origin. The english words were considered less refined, and sometimes, so bad, that they developed into curse words; like the word shit for example, of Anglo Saxon origin (Dent, 2018).

It’s not just curse words that this happens too. The word “ain’t” used to be considered proper, believe it or not. But then, “ain’t became associated with lower-class characters” (Thesaurus.com, 2019). And now, ain’t is associated with the lower class, improper grammar, and isn’t really even considered to be a word. However, you’ll notice that it’s literally just a contraction that means “not”. This just goes to show that time after time, elites will consider certain forms of language (typically that of the poorer class) to be improper for no good reason whatsoever, and that these norms are carried throughout time, usually unquestioned.

Curse words tend to form around taboo subjects. As (Orlando 2023) put it, “profanity can also come from language involving sex and sexual acts, as well as bodily functions.” This mean that they do form naturally, it’s not all just the doing of elitism, however, elitism clearly exasperates it and creates more ideas of purity in language than necessary.

So in summary, people in power tend to try and control or purify language, seemingly out of an unwillingness to accept other cultures. curse words tend to originate from touchy subjects, but can also be formed and exasperated based on the same concept, by the conventions of the upper class, or in other words, the elites being repulsed by the terrible foul language of the common man. So the next time you feel bad about using a curse word, or that your grammar is “improper” just remember that its vulgarity was completely made up by Norman aristocrats one thousand years ago, and there really isn’t such a thing as proper grammar.

Pitch-clock is making the game better

For a very long time, pitching and hitting in Major League Baseball have been under the same rules.

Starting last year, Major League Baseball changed the rules of the game and implemented a pitch-clock. This stopped batters from taking their time doing their rituals or routines before stepping into the box for an at-bat. It prevented pitchers from playing around on the mound for a long amount of time and to stop trying to pick off the runners on base as much. The pitch-clock was implemented to create more action on the basepaths between runners and to speed the game up for the fans. It tended more to the casual fans of the game because they complained baseball games were too long.

Most fans were wondering, why add pitch-clock? They have not seen such a rule implemented before and they were curious as to how it would work for the sport and if it would be a good or bad addition.

The players have had mixed opinions as some like it while others don’t. According to a player on the Toronto Blue Jays, Chris Bassit: “I think we’re going to quickly realize,” Bassitt said, “that it’s more so going to be, ‘How can we use this against the hitters?” Chris Bassitt is a pitcher and thinks the pitchers have the advantage in this new rule. Pitchers’ opinions are thought of but batters have a side as well. In the same article, Pitchers are adamant, Aaron Judge claims: “I completely forgot about it until about three pitches in, and then I had to kind of check myself because I was getting into the box around eight or nine seconds.”

Batters and pitchers are not together on this new rule. The batters seem to not like the pitch-clock and feel it is a violation of their time. Some pitchers think the rule is good for baseball and are accepting it and adapting to the rule. For years these players were batting and pitching without any time limit to doing it. It was only until the new rules were added that players started to realize just how long they would take in between pitches and how it affected at-bats.

At the same time though, why wouldn’t these players take their time? Baseball is one of the hardest sports to play and even the best players are only able to get a hit one out of every three times. Swinging at a pitch that you know is a ball makes a player think about that action and throwing a strike right down the middle that gets walloped also makes a player think. By taking their time, these players were able to get rid of the thought of the last play or pitch and focus on the next one.

Pitch-clock isn’t preventing a pitcher from pitching well and a batter from batting badly. Pitch-clock is there so the players can get better at their craft in a shorter amount of time. Pitch-clock is for all the players who are able to adapt and overcome challenges, it isn’t for the players that aren’t willing to try something new.

In a normal league, pitch-clock probably wouldn’t exist, but because of the fans and the commissioners wanting to expand the audience of the game, it is implemented and the players have to deal with it and adapt to it.

Unfortunately players have not played with the pitch-clock enough to get the rules changed. It isn’t like they can go up to the plate and tell the umpire how much time they want for a single at-bat. It isn’t like pitchers can tell the batters they need thirty to forty seconds in order to get ready for the next pitch. They all have to be ready at a certain point or else there are consequences. In the article, How are MLB’s pitchers handling the pitch clock?, Alex Vesia claimed: “It was not good,” Vesia recalled to FOX Sports this week. “I felt really, really rushed. My first spring training outing, I was nervous to go out there because I didn’t know how much the clock was going to affect me. But then after the first one, I was like, ‘OK, I can do it.’” Alex Vesia who has been a professional for a few years was nervous because he felt like he wasn’t in control of pitching. This just shows how some players are scared of a change when it hasn’t happened in a long time.

We have never seen pitch-clock in the MLB before but we have still seen it. In 2022, the Triple-A and Double-A minor leagues tested out the pitch-clock and it went great. These players were noticeably better at handling it when called up to the big leagues compared to the big league veterans who have been there for years. It worked exactly how the MLB wanted it to while also providing a few clues on how to make it better and what tweaks are needed when it was implemented the next year in the major leagues. After one year of pitch clock so far it has gone well. Most fans are now on board and most players support the rules.

Pitch-clock was never meant to hurt pitchers or batters, it always was meant to make the game better and make players better at what they do. Pitch-clock was the result of fans and the commissioner complaining the game was too long. Players have now adapted after a year and it will be interesting to see how pitch-clock will affect the 2024 year of baseball. The players seem to be in a better spot now then where they were a year ago when dealing with the new rule. Fear and nervousness, however, always come with change when change is implemented. The rules could possibly change in the future and that is a very big possibility. With any type of rule comes the possibility of change in the future. The simple solution to possibly changing pitch-clock could be for the players to ask the commissioner to change them.
