Why Dogs Are Driving People Away

Dogs can be some of the most loyal and important figures in people’s lives. They are there for you when others aren’t, and wont turn their backs on you. While dogs are very popular amongst most, some people do not like dogs for different reasons. Some could be afraid of dogs based on the stereotypes of their breed, they have had a bad experience with a dog, or they really just do not care about them. If a dog is with a homeless person out on the streets, it may not be the answer to securing people’s attention in a positive way, and could actually drive the possible donors away. 

If a mom and her daughter are walking the streets and see a homeless person, they may not feel safe going up to a homeless person and giving them a donation. Especially if the daughter for example is at a young age, the mother could have some drawbacks. A reason why a homeless person with a dog is not likely to get donations is because the donor could be scared of getting attacked by the dog, or their child getting attacked. Not all dogs are sweet and friendly, especially if they are out on the streets. There can be fear that if you get close to the dog and its owner that the dog would attack you and leave you with scars for the rest of your life. A mother with a young kid such as a daughter has every right to be nervous about their child going near a homeless person, and their dog because they do not know how the dog is around people. According to the article titled, Why are friendly dogs turning ferocious? Here are the reasons and how to stop the human-dog conflict, and how dogs are more likely to attack when, “…they are left hungry and thirsty on the streets; there are no caretakers or very few people who care for them…”(ET Online and Agencies, 2023). This supports the possible fear of the people walking on the streets going to donate because they do not know how the dog is and are at risk of getting attacked. 

In some people’s eyes, seeing a dog could draw attention and make someone want to help out. In other people’s eyes, the dog is not something that is appealing and is not something that makes them want to donate. Just because there is a dog next to a homeless person does not automatically make everyone feel bad and want to help. Non dog people would not be interested in the slightest to help out the dog and its owner. A reason why people could not like dogs is because they have had a bad past experience with dogs. It takes one time to affect some people’s mentality about some things, and with dogs if something bad happens once, it can turn them off to the idea of dogs forever. If a person who does not like dogs sees a dog outside with a homeless person, and they had a bad experience they would not want to approach that person. Even if they want to help out the person, the dog next to them could turn them off to even approaching the homeless. 

Dogs in homes already can be dirty and smell and have fleas and ticks. Not all dogs are clean and can carry diseases and can just be dirty overall. Especially if one is big on hygiene and not getting sick, going near a stranger’s dog who has been outside may not be the best idea. Diseases can be passed from dogs to people which some may not realize. Especially if it is a homeless guy with a dog, who knows what that dog has picked up from being on the streets without proper care. According to the article titled, Diseases You Can Get From Your Pets, states how a dog can give humans the septicemic plague which can cause, “…fever and chills or headache, among other symptoms. It can be fatal if not treated with antibiotics”(Frysh, 2024). Other diseases can include hookworm, rabies, and tapeworm which is rare but is still possible. This could be a huge reason why people would hesitate to approach a homeless person and give a donation. The fear attached with it and getting dirty or even a disease is not worth it to some people. 

There are stereotypes with people like the homeless, and with dog breeds. If a homeless person were to have a chiwawa as their dog, someone may be more likely to approach a homeless person and give a donation rather than if it was a pitbull. A pitbull has been a dog breed that was feared for a long time based on the stereotypes. They are said to be mean and vicious and could even kill someone. If a homeless person had a pitbull, that would be so that their dog could protect them from the possible harm going on around them. But that would almost be contradictory if they would want donations, because the dog would be more trained to attack than to be nice. According to the article titled, The Stereotypes Surrounding Pit Bulls, states how “…their behavior ultimately depends on their individual personality, early socialization, and training”(Brinkley, 2023). If the pitbulls are used to just being out on the streets, most likely they would be in flight or fight mode. With this mode and how they were socialized, they may not be the friendliest and most approachable. If the homeless had a smaller dog which is known to be better behaved, then maybe a stranger would be more likely to give a donation. The dog breeds definitely would be a big contender of whether or not the people would be driven away from helping the dog and its owner.  

Overall, dogs may not be the answer to acquiring more donations. The fears that can be attached with dogs are factors that can drive people away. Dogs are not always as sweet as they look, and these strangers have the right to be nervous to approach them, let alone a homeless person which can be scary enough for some people. Overall, people would not want to approach a homeless person and their dog because of the fear of being attacked, acquiring a disease, and because of the dog breed they have. The donations could be limited with dogs by the owners’ sides, and the dogs could actually be the reason why more and more people are not willing to approach a homeless person and help them out.

This city of Vancouver is suffering from an epidemic of heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program has the goal of aiding to the decreasing crime rate of heroin addicts. However the crime rate has not seen much of a change. Daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are a difficult part of daily life for addicts. No matter the cost, heroin addicts will do whatever they can to get their hands on the drug. It has come to be known that breaking and entering, and stealing are the most common crimes committed by addicts, all to feed the addiction. There is an inconsistency with this program, not only does it enable the addicts, but also keeps them addicted to heroin. The crime rates are still immensely high, as well as the number of addicts. The only benefit is that by providing the drug, it will keep heroin users from flooding the hospitals. By providing clean needles and uncontaminated substances it solves the dilemma of unpaid hospital bills, and less beds available for ill patients. The program allows heroin addicts to receive the drug in the cleanest, and safest way. However the addiction at hand is still severe, and this solution is not preventing it or fixing it.

Vancouver faces difficulty with their crime rate increasing because of the heroin addicts trying to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program has a hard time of assisting the addicts to stop. Aiddcits obviously struggle to continue in their day to day lives because their main priority is to get the drug. The program does not even want to help the addicts it is only trying to decrease the crime rate. Allowing the drug to be provided keeps users from committing crimes. The program keeps the addicts from hospitals where they clearly do not care for themselves in order to be there after and not being able to afford to pay the bills. The program just gives the addicts a free and cleaner way to use the drug and keep the city safer. The program does not fix the addiction that the people face.

Heroin dependence drives users to extreme lengths to obtain the drug, resulting in offenses such as burglary and theft. The endless search of the drug knows no bounds, creating challenges for law enforcement. Despite its intention to stop rising crime rates, the program falls short in addressing the main cause of addiction. While providing free heroin may temporarily slow down crime-rates and reduce hospital admissions due to unsafe drug use, it fails to address the addiction crisis. By prioritizing harm reduction over rehabilitation, the program overlooks the long-term well-being of individuals trapped in addiction cycles. While it may solve current concerns, it does little to break the cycle of addiction in the city.

Heroin addicts committing crimes to support their addiction is a huge problem in Vancouver.  The “free heroin for addicts” program offers a solution to these problems.  Heroin addicts live difficult lives because of their addiction, which makes Daily activities such as jobs and relationships hard to maintain.  Because heroin users are addicted, they will stop at nothing to get their hands on drugs.  Often resorting to criminal activities such as breaking and entering, as well as theft.  This program does not aim to wean addicts off of heroin, it is only trying to save the city from rising crime rates.  The program will appease the addict’s addiction which in turn will prevent them from committing minor street crimes while also keeping them out of hospitals.  This program is the most effective way to alleviate the issues caused by heroin addicts.

A  huge issue in Vancouver is heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits. Vancouver’s “free heroin for addicts” program is doing everything it can to stop the addicts, but the program won’t help ween these addicts off heroin.  The problem is the large crime rate due to the addicts. The other issues that heroin addicts face are daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships. Heroin users will do whatever they can to get ahold of the drug. Breaking and entering is a big issue with heroin users. People will go to lengths to obtain this drug to feed their addiction. This program will save the city from rising crime rates. There should be a decrease in minor street crimes because the addicts will be off the street, and there also should be a decrease in heroin users in hospitals. These hospitals have to deal with the addicts being unable to afford hospital bills and have coping issues, which is unfortunate.  This program gives people free heroin in the cleanest way possible, hopefully, this will fix the city and the addictions.

Vancouver is trying to help the situation with the “free heroin for addicts program which tries to stop the addicts. The issue of large crime rates rising can be attributed to the addicts. Addicts have a rough time getting through their day to day lives and activities such like jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to keep because of the addiction. Heroin users being addicted to the drug makes them do whatever they can to get their hands on it, and the crimes they will commit for it are most commonly breaking and entering as well as stealing. Heroin users will stop at nothing to try and retrieve this drug for their addiction, and the program won’t help to ween the users off the drug addiction. The program wants to only save the city from increasing crime rates if they want to. Giving the drug to the addicts will result in them getting off the streets as well as preventing them from committing the crimes while also keeping them out of the hospital.Hospitals are stuck dealing with people who want to use these harder drugs or even worse, unsanitary needles and the addicts then have to pay unaffordable bills and this visit makes it harder for them to cope without the drug. The program gives addicts free heroin in the most sanitary way possible, which will result in fixing the city but not fixing the issue of the addiction these users face.

Vancouver’s Response to Heroin Addiction

Heroin addicts in Vancouver are committing crimes to obtain drugs, creating an alarming trend. The “free heroin for addicts” initiative makes a valiant effort to support them. However, the addicts continue to be a major cause of crime. Addicts obviously struggle in their day-to-day lives. Because they are dependent on heroin, they find it difficult to maintain their jobs, relationships, and social interactions. Addicts will stop at nothing to obtain the drug. To support their addiction, they trespass and steal. They don’t care where it’s dangerous as long as they can get heroin. Using a clean method, this program provides free heroin to addicts. Addicts won’t need to steal, which could help lower street crime. It might also prevent them from visiting hospitals. Yet, the program doesn’t actually assist heroin addicts in stopping. It only makes an effort to address the issue of crime. Therefore, even though it might resolve some pressing problems, it doesn’t help these people with their addiction.

Vancouver faces huge difficulties with the rise of heroin addicts developing an unsafe community with the crimes that are committed in order to support their habit. To achieve a goal of stopping the addicts, a program was created called “Free heroin for addicts” in order for this goal to be fulfilled. Due to these addicts the problem of large crime rates have risen which results in the addicts having a difficult time to complete tasks. With the use of constant addictive drugs activities are hard to maintain such as jobs, interactions, and relationships. The addictive drugs forced the user to make unsensible decisions just to get their hands on the drug.  Crimes like breaking, entering and entering are just some of the acts committed by the user of heroin. The addicts are willing to take any precaution to get this drug so that they are able to satisfy their addiction. Addiction is not something that is simply extinguished and this program will be hard to do that. Their only objective is to reduce the rising crime rate in the city rather than helping these individuals and in the process keeping the users out of the hospital. With the addicts on verge of overdosing using unsanitary needles, bad drugs, and being unstable to pay for the hospital bills and living without drugs.
