- Implementing rules similar to a shootout in hockey will be more fair to both teams in the case of overtime in an NFL game.
- Implementing NCAA Football overtime rules to NFL overtimes, including an extra section (15 extra minutes of play time) and a shootout if both teams stay tied after the extra time, would be more entertaining to fans and be more fair to both teams rather than relying on the first touchdown to be scored to decide the game.

I appreciate that lots of football fans consider the “new” overtime rules unfair to the team that loses “the toss,” ExcellentStudent, but I need convincing, and I think you’ll need to address a couple of key questions.
1. Why do many teams “play for overtime” at home if there’s a chance they could be substantially disadvantaged by losing the toss and having to first defend against a game-ending touchdown?
2. How strong can the objection to the “coin-toss” advantage be if some teams that win the toss decide to defer possession?
I look forward to any research you can come up with to address these questions.
