When the highlight of a terminally ill patients day is a lull in the suffering, death is a salvation. However, today we refuse to give patients experiencing unimaginable amounts of pain, suffering, and loss of dignity the right to end their lives. If we as a society feel so strongly about putting animals out of their misery, why not our loved ones? It could be said that animals, in this regard, are treated with more compassion than humans.

To me, this opening is stronger than the one you’re using in your Research Position Paper, YDK. If you start here, and then wonder philosophically about the many ways we define life and death, you’ll have established earlier your position that you favor assisted suicide. I also recommend that, since you have a powerful ally in Stephen Hawking, you quote him in this paragraph instead of making your own unsourced analogy on the way we treat our beloved pets.
